Hello all newbie here just bought my first DSLR Canon 450d.

Looking at a zoom lens mainly for motorsport.

Looking at these at the mo and cannot decide i had thought about the 55-250 but after speaking to some Pro guys at Brands on Sat morning they say get at least a 300mm or i will be frustrated with the pics i get.

The lenses

Thanks

55-250 or 70-300. Where are you likely to spend your time? For a first lens I would probably look at the 55-250 over the 70-300, or if your budget permitted, a good secondhand Sigma 100-300 f4. Don't be afraid of considering lenses from Sigma or Tamron.

Le Mans - not been myself, but Gary will probably pipe up and say that unless you have trackside access, the best thing to do is take pics of your mates and enjoy the racing.

Silverstone prefers a slightly longer lens, but you can easily crop your shots down slightly.
Brands has many shooting locations for shorter lenses.

I would stretch your budget a bit and go for a Sigma 100-300 F4

Andrewc uses one, as do i with pretty reasonable results.

Alternatively i would look at the sigma 70-200 f2.8 or Canon 70-200 F4. You can then use a 1.4 TC to get near enough 300mm.

Canon 70-300 IS or the more expensive and better Sigma 100-300 f4.

If you aren't trackside you probably want something with 300mm.
