Which Lens next for a D90

I only have a 50mm 1.8 for my newly aquired D90 but i am looking for a lens with more reach. It would def have to have VR on it and i really dont want to spend hundreds of pounds as the wife will cut off my child allowance!!

So, any ideas as to what i could use with the 50mm?

When i had a Canon i liked the 55-250. Any Nikon equivelent? Cheers people

Nikon do have a Canon equivalent telezoom kit lens. You can pick them up rather cheap and they also have IS/VR.
 
There is the 55-300 which is a good lens and you also have the 70-300 VR which is brilliant. Not sure about the cost of the first as I haven't had Nikon kit for a little while now but the 70-300 could be had for less than £300 s/h if you are a little bit patient.

Personally I'd give VR a miss (very useful as it may be) and get a 50-150 Sigma 2.8 (they are discontinued) but can be had s/h for around £300 and are amazing lenses (had one for my D40/D7K setup.)

55-200 VR lens. About £140-150. Same sort of good value/ performance as the Canon.
Otherwise I'd go 70-300 VR- second hand maybe £250-300 depending.

There is a 55-300 but the 70-300 is a better option in my opinion.

I don't think you will get a 2.8 500mm lens for £300. If you know where to get one please let me know.

Apologies to you. For some reason I read 50-500 2.8. I think my brain was still asleep when I read your post. It would be a nice lens though.
