Which lens to start with

hopefully I will get new 40d at the beginning of June from Kerso ( If I will get enough money from insurance to cover my car dmg ) .
And Im asking for your advice regarding lenses for a good start with this body. I dont need big zoom and I was thinking about 50mm. Maybe I would have another 100f to spend for another lens set but which one? Or maybe i should forget about 50mm and add money for it to this 100f? ...
Im going for a wedding soon and I think that 50mm would be just fine for this event..

You'd ideally want to get a lens that covers a standard zoom, therefore giving you some versatility.

There is the Sigma 24-70, the Sigma 24-60, Canon 24-70, Canon 24-105, Sigma 18-200, Canon 24-85, Canon 28-135, Canon 17-85, Canon 17-55.
Read up about them, decide on a focal length that suits you.

Is it worth to go for Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO ?

So 28-135mm should be the best for me for the beggining...maybe I will get used one in good price as new one is around 300f...
