Happy New Year everyone, i would like a bit of advice regarding a lens i want to buy. I am interested in the Sigma 18-250, but have noticed there are two very similar, they are :

Sigma 18-250mm f3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM Lens - Canon Fit

and

Sigma 18-250mm f3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM - Canon Fit

The first one with macro is roughly £100 more than the second one, and the second one is smaller and lighter, is it worth the extra £100 for the first one or not,your advice would be much appreciated.

Too be honest neither. These hyper zooms promise the wide to telephoto i.e. 18-xxx range, but actually delivery very average performance. As for your lens, the macro version is the newer version of the 2 and the macro is the better lens of the 2.

What are you intending to use it for. One lens all options? Really doesn't exist. You would be better off with 2 lenses 18-xx and say a 55-250mm or 70-300mm rather than the one lens
 
Hi Pete, yes i was basically looking for a one lens solution for everyday purposes, but i am a little worried about the quality of the photos it will produce, but i was trying to save having to carry two lens and keep changing lens.

It depends what you want, you'll get reasonable images, but if you start to crop into the images that's where you notice the difference. Also because the best ratio for a zoom is 1:4 so 70-200 is ideal, but when you start to have larger ratios so 18-250 = 1:13/14 this just creates major issue with image quality.

By all accounts from the reviews the new lens has ironed out some of the major issue with the old lens especially when you step the aperture down, but these lenses are really for practicality rather than quality images, a holiday / travel lens.
 
Yes its very difficult choosing when on a tight budget, i don't know if you would know the answer to this question : how would the image quality compare with the standard 18-55 canon kit lens i got with the camera?
