Hello

I'm about to buy a monopod but am unsure which to go for now.

I was recommended the Redsnapper one (http://www.redsnapperuk.com/tripod-monopod.html)
but I've just found this one (velbon) http://www.bristolcameras.co.uk/p-velbon-ultra-stick-50-monopod.htm which seems to be half the weight...

As weight and transportability is an issue (I have to carry stuff while I'm trekking in a forest and I'm not strong so want the lightest weight I can afford) I wondered if the velbon was a better option, but I'm worried it may not be good enough?

Or are there other light weight options (not the expensive carbon fibre ones as sadly I can't stretch to that much!) :)?

I'll be using it with a canon 450d and a canon 100 - 400 lens

If its any use to you Manfrotto are doing a deal on theirs where you get a free 234RC head with some....

I occasionally use a 4 section manfrotto 680B. It is rock solid, and easily supports a large DSLR and a heavy lens. I got it, mint, for £23 quid posted off ebay. The Giotto mentioned by the above poster is pretty much identical. People seem to offload monopods all the time, perhaps they are an acquired taste, so you should easily be able to bag a good second-hand deal.

I previously used the Redsnapper - very sturdy but also a bit on the heavy side when hiking.

I've just replaced it with the Slik Pro 381 CF (only weighs 380g) - a bit on the expensive side for a monopod but very light and as sturdy as the Redsnapper, takes the Manfrotto 234RC head if you have one too

I bought mine from Morris Photo, very fast delivery - I'd post a link but their website isn't working this morning :shrug:

Wow that is light. I don't have the head yet do I'd have to buy that too. I think that might take it beyond my price range unfortunately :(

I'm totally confused now. It seems it's really hard to get a monopod with head that's under 500g total weight and not too expensive. The Slik one looks good but once you add the head it takes it to over 800g.

I'm not sure what to do now :help:

well as I go in 2 weeks it's probably a bit late for that :D

The main problem is I'm trekking from 6am to 5pm in 80 degree heat, 80% humidity in a rainforest on steep terrain that is rough underfoot (limestone karst) and as well as carrying all my camera gear I'm carrying all my research equipment, food and water for the day (lots of water in that climate) and everything else I need... hence my desire to make the monopod as light as possible as I know I won't be able to manage it if it's too much. I'm only 5ft 2 and fit-ish, but I'm no strong woman! :lol:
