guys i fancy a nifty fifty for my nikon d5000(the fiancee is buying me it for my bday) which one would do? i would like one that works well with my camera. any ideas? thanks

Sadly none of the cheap niftys work with the D5000 (or rather, won't autofocus).
I'd agree with ^^^, get the 35mm

can you point me into the direction of the 35mm f1.8g. i guess the d5000 is a full frame camera ok? also do i need to to change the setting or anything on the camera?

Nope, D5000 is a crop body camera.
35mm on a D5000 is equivalent to 50mm on a full frame.

on another point could you explain the difference between a crop body and full body camera? so i would be ok with the 35mm one then i would like to get a good 2nd hand one if i can thanks for all the help

Before I can recommend, what will you be using it for. What focal length do you typically use at the moment. You have the 35mm 1.8 at £170 and the 50mm 1.4 at £279.
I personally would be lost without my 50mm, and would find 35mm too short. Most shots are kids and baby portraits.

Basically the difference is the size of the sensor (which gives some performance differences) but the main difference is that on a crop body the effective magnification of a lens is 1.5x that of the same lens length on a full frame.
So, a 300mm lens on a crop body gives the same 'zoom' as a 450mm lens on a full frame camera. Therefore, if you want to take pics of things a long way away (little birdies) then it is cheaper to get a crop body as you get more magnification from the same mm lens.

Nikon full frame would be D700 or D3/D3s/D3x. Everything else is crop. DX lenses will not work that well on full frame, 'normal' lenses are fine on both.
If you had a D700 and say your D5000 and both had a 50mm on, the view through the D5000 would make it appear you are closer. If you had the 85mm on D700 and the 50mm on the 5000 both would be almost the same.
