Which Nikon 50mm f/1.4?

Okay, I'm switching. Looking for a D700 and will ultimately add a Sigma 85mm f/1.4, but I'm looking for a Nikon 50mmm f1.4 to replace my Canon version.

I see there is more than one though. Which one is favourite and how sharp are they wide open?
 
The 50mm 1.4 afs is supposed to be the sharper of the two I believe. That's purely from internet research though, no tests of my own I'm afraid.

I've had a couple of the af-s versions and there was some variation between them - one was sharp wide open, the other needed stopping down to 1.8 for critical sharpness.

They are lovely lenses though, especially on the D700.

My AF-S 1.4 could have been better wide open, but once stopped down to 1.8 its was sharp as anything. Only sold it to get a 85mm f/1.8 which I will use more, a I have the 24-70 to cover 50mm
 
My recent posts of Evie in forum section was taken using the 50mm AFS - lovely lens.
 
I'd say go with AF-S as it's not that much more than AF-D, but AF-D is pretty good, I had one that I used on my old D70s. With AF-D you even have the option of going "old school" and using the aperture ring for setting aperture :cool:
 
I owned 50 af-s but it was quite slow in focus and while is a good lens is not spectacular... I'm more happy with the IQ of the old MF 50/1.2 AI-S. But for AF I found that Sigma 50/1.4 is very sweet, but I use it almost exclusively for shooting people. For other applications may not work so well...
 
I also use my 50mm sigma 1.4 , to my eyes the sigma does look sharper wide open compared to the 1.4d, and as it is gsm focusing is very quite, also the bokeh looks a lot more creamier, balances well on my d3
 
The Sigma is my first choice, but may have to make do with a Nikon till I've more funds.
 
in reality you can not really tell the difference when you look at photos taken with both.
i had both and only sold the D as i figured the D700 and afs where probably going to match up better as both later technology.
i liked my D a lot

you wont be disappointed by either :)

ps i couldn't see any real world focus speed differences
