hi all:) :help:
going to be buying my first dslr soon and after many evenings looking at cameras online and also having a feel of the cameras in a few shops im stuck between the D90 and the D5000 twin lens kit, really want the d90 but its just out of my reach at the moment money wise plus it only comes with one lens,

the D5000 twin lens kit i can get for my current budget, not feeling the movable screen though:shrug: also ive read on here(i think) about the D90 having the pentaprism and the autofocus motor/mechanism? built in and the D5000 has a pentamirror and no af motor/mechanism built in.

if the above is correct, is there a big difference in the two models apart from the obvious? and the pro and cons between the two.

any help would be much appreciated, my money will be cleared in the bank soon and its got camera written all over it:naughty: and the excitement is killing me:nuts:

Dan

The D90 has the edge all round, yes it does have the AF motor in the body, the 5000 doesn't and yes that does make a difference when it comes to getting more lenses later on, there is more choice and lower cost.
At the end of the day you have to ask yourself if 4 months down the line you will be wishing you had bought the D90 and made do with the kit lens for a couple of months.
Incidentally the 18-105 is quite a versatile lens.

So yes IMHO its worth finding the extra if you can and going for the D90.

I've narrowed it down to the same two models. The D90 also has a top LCD screen, an extra control wheel etc.

Its also heavier and this is partly what's making me consider the D5000.

+1 for the D90
I think you'll find that you upgrade a lot sooner if you go for the D5000. Have you considered a 2nd hand D90? as mentioned it is a much better and much more versatile camera.

thanks for your replys, they have pretty much confirmed it for me, i did have it in my head that if i get the d5000 i would very soon be wishing i got the d90.

i have thought about 2nd hand but im a bit worried not having the warranty for back up if something goes pete tong, plus people dont seem to sell them with any lenses:(

although im itching to get a camera and start snapping i think i will wait a bit and save a bit more dosh to get the d90.

thanks for your advise guys n girls its much appreciated.

Dan

Very sensible! The D90 is very good (apparently) so if it's what you really want then it will be worth the wait and hey you may get lucky and they may offer cash back or reduce the price.

I have had Canon for the last few years but now have a D5000 and it's really growing on me. It has the same sensor as the D90 so IQ will be very similar.

Hope you get your D90 soon.

Already this has been pointed out in brief. Just for a gentle reminder.

The main advantage of D90 over D5000 are as follows.

1. D90 has a built-in focus motor that allows you to AF (autofocus) with all AF- D lenses

2. D90's pop-up flash is able to wirelessly trigger up to two different groups of CLS-compatible (CLS stands for Nikon's Creative Lighting System wireless flash technology) Nikon flash units.

3. The brighter and bigger pentaprism viewfinder on the D90 (the D5000 has a pentamirror VF) means you get a clearer image in the VF and will experience less eye fatigue. This is especially important if you have to look through the VF continuously for extended periods of time, exactly the kind of conditions shooting if you will put through in

4. If you ever buy one , the option of having a handgrip on a D90 gives greater confidence for shooting the camera handheld while viewing and composing the scene through the viewfinder.

Otherwise both are great cameras are on their own..No doubts.

PM Stuart from Digital Depot (username Digital Depot funnily enough) for a price on a D90 body only - he gave me a stunning price. Then pick up a used 18-55mm on here, I paid £40 - D90 + lens for £610  then when you can afford it plump for a 55-200mm, awsome lens

thanks Andy;)

slt roopan thank you for putting that up for me;)

Timmy thanks, i think i'll do that;) theres one in the sales section with 19056 clicks on it for £450 or £465 with a grip but no lenses, my budget atm is £600 but could maybe push to £650, i havent even thought about the cost of mem card and a bag to keep it all tucked up in yet:lol:

+1 for the d90.

Visit 7dayshop for cheap bits... and if it helps with the choice, i will send you a couple of 2gig memory cards... anything to help a fellow soon to be d90 owner!

Don't worry Dan. SDHC is cheaper than the CF cards.

thats a relief:D thanks for helping me,it really is appreciated;) ive been doing my own head in over all this for nearly a month now lol ive got square eyes from reading so many reviews and specs on different cameras.

stokes thank you sir thats very kind of you;)

with a £600 buget you'd be mad not to go down the D90 body only and 18-55mm route imo  Stuart will give you a good price on a brand new UK model with 2 years warranty

whereabouts in West Sussex are you mate? I'm in Worthing so if you're local and fancy a bit of a play with the D90? only problem is I'm away for this weekend and don't get home from work till 8pm every night lol.

An 8GB transcend Class 10 mem card is £12 from Amazon to get you started, thats what I use. And a Lowepro Mini Nova: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Lowepro-Nova-...931428&cguid=5843e2c712b0a0aa12412ad1fff91f8c
I got that for my gf, it fits just the SLR and lens attached but for a tenner till you can afford a bigger one its a no brainer!
And as for lens as said, check out the 18-55mm or if you can stretch a bit more the 18-70mm (I've got that and gave my gf the 18-55mm). You'll get it all in for under £650 defo

I'm not far from you, I'm near Caterham so just up the A22. Perhaps when you get your camera we could go out for the afternoon and we can show you how to do this photography lark! :D

cool:D that would be very handy cheers mate;) as i know nothing:(

ive pm'd stuart (digital depot) so hopefully he'll sort me out with a good price and we'll go from there, cant wait to get one in my hand and start taking pics,

lmao have i lost it or is it normal for me to be this excited about a camera:cuckoo:

don't forget your passport ;)

nope totally normal ;)

:D thats a relief:lol:

also another question if i may? (saves starting another thread) ive got an option of getting an 18-105 and a 24-120 lens both second hand and both have vr, is it worth getting both or which one of the two is a better lens?

the 18-105mm for sure

But does that have a UK warranty?

not sure if it does which is why im proberly not going to go for it. still trying to hunt down the best deal on body only and also body plus a lens.
will get there in the end:D

Consider some 2nd hand quality kit.
D200 body
85mm 1.8 lens or 50mm 1.8 lens

Cracking glass, far superior to kit lenses and a solid body built to last and take some knocks.
OK, its not got the latest gimmicks on but if you want to be able to take pro level pics this is a very good value option.

Just popping in to this thread to add weight to the argument for buying a D90.

Buy the D90 new (can vouch for digitaldepot) and have a good look around here for 2nd hand lens. TP members look after their gear and I'm sure that you'll have no issues with a 2nd hand lens.

Also, buy it now! If you hold out too long, something will come along that will eat away at your savings for your camera.

Looking forward to another member of the D90 club

in line with original post, if paentaprism is of importance maybe you should consider Pentax, they did invent it after all !

Seriously, D90 is great camera but if a bit tight on funds, also consider a Pentax K20D, I just got mine used, 18 months old with original receipt, pentax service just completed, 7000 shutters - under £400 Matching 18-55WR lens new but unboxed £55
You can get the 50-200 for about £70 these days.

All this kit performs well above these price tags.

just do it! get a D90 and you won't look back. Maybe....a 50mm 1.8 too  like..I dunno..the one I've put in the FS section :p

got to get this camera sorted before i can start offerings on a lens.
im hoping to get one with a lens but have a 18-105 lined up on here hopefully if i dont get one with it.
