Which sub £200 compact camera

Thought I would post here so as not to insult anyone by talking about compacts in the equipment section....

Ideally I only want to pay around £150 for a compact camera, but am prepared to go up to £200 if the extra is worth it.

I would like a decent zoom say around 10X and would like manual override ability - without sacrificing image quality (e.g. noise, vignetting)

Its for everyday use I suppose, you know the ones when you want a camera but dont wanna be lugging around the old DSLR.

Lets see what you guys can recommend...

You should be able to get a refurb Canon S90 for about £200
 
Fuji S100fs is a belter ,mine cost £130 absolute bargain IMO of course
 
I think my mum had the Samsung WB600 ended up taking it back after constant problems with it not switching on, losing its charge. If its the same one it doesn't come with a separate battery charger, it charges via a USB cable and it seemed to cause no end of problems. It could have just been a faulty one though.
She swapped it for a Panasonic FZ38 and has been happy with that.
 
Plus one for the Fuji S100FS. Although you'd have to buy one s/h, it is an absolute corker. 800 and even 1600 ISO is pretty amazing, and it's got a great feel to it.
 
:thinking: read the OP guys he wants a compact, by recommending the Fuji S100fs you may as well have said get a DSLR its almost the same size as his 20D.

Thanks for those recommends... I was contemplating both the TZ10 and the SX210, but I do also like the reviews of the other two. I think my choice will come from that list - cheers!
 
I don't think any of those 4 will disappoint it really is down to personal choice whichever one you choose will be a great pocket companion. :thumbs:

Still a compact though ,the OP wasn't that specifc what kind of compact ,there are loads of styles ,just defending my suggestion of the Fuji S100fs
 
Compact! :eek: The body is bigger than a Canon 400D SLR. He doesnt want to be lugging around an SLR. :thinking:
 
No I'd reckon it's a fair bit smaller! But yeah, it's not a compact but it's the only thing I've had such quality out of that isn't a DSLR.

400D = 5" wide and 3.7" high and 6" deep with the 17-85 zoom (6.3" with the 18-135)

s100fs = 5.3" wide and 3.7" high and 6" deep
(lets see you put that in your shirt pocket :eek:)

Don't want to get picky and petty about it :love: but definitely not a fair bit smaller, so not even close to being considered a compact. :thumbs:

Fair enough, my bad. When it's sat next to my D200 and 70-309 VR, always looked a Loy smaller :lol:

But.... for one that gives such good quality high up the iso range...and such a big zoom...it is compact..ish! :run away:

LOL to be fair the Canon 4** and 5** series are very neat little DSLRs, I use a 500D with an 18-135 as my day to day out for a walk with the dog type camera but like your D200 when I use my Gripped 50D with the 17-55 f2.8 attached it feels massive (and flippin heavy!) which does indeed make the 400d feel 'compact-ish' :naughty: . Unfortunately I now want to try one of these Fuji thingys. Damn these forums and there subliminal messages drawing me inexorably towards poverty and divorce :bang:

:lol: you won't regret it! Just don't go for the little types with no manual wheels and zooming etc, I find then restrictive!

Thanks for the responses, I settled in the end for the Lumix TZ8 (decided I dont need video or GPS enough to warrant the extra price for the TZ10), plus I managed to get my local Jessops to let me have it for £165.

Got a couple of Transcend class 6 memory cards on order so looking forward to trying it out properly - keep having to delete the handful of images the internal memory holds.

Pleased so far - low light impressive.

Today postman brought me new shiny Nikon s8000 :) from amazon for 139£ (price reduction)
really nice piece of kit. bought it for my GF :)
