I have just taken up photography and have a real passion for wildlife. I have got to a point where i need a good rugged tripod and head. As there are many to choose from, and no knowledge i wonder if someone can give me some advice on the best type, and what head do i need. I have looked at the RED Snapper range, and they look good. But again not sure which would suit.
Any help would be much appreciated

If you could state your budget, we can have a better idea of what you can get for your money ;)

Probably willing to spend around £100-140

If the £140 tops is for legs and head, your best bet IMO would be a Redsnapper, with 10% extra discount if you're a Talk Photography member.

For wildlife, unless you have a 500 or 600mm lens, you should be able to handhold but if you want a head and tripod for landscapes/night shots, then I'd recommend a ballhead.

Hope this helps! :)

As above--what lenses do you have? and what kind of wildlife ( e.g. small birds or things like large deer ) It will help us make a better decision.

At present i use a gripped Canon 450d biggest lens i currently have is the sigma 120-400HSM plus 1.4 Convertor. Wildlife interests are birds of prey and all types of mammels from foxes to Large cats.
hope this helps

Do a search for the weight of the lens as i dont think its that heavy and add weight of camera--most heads and tripods give a max weight ( just dont take to the max weight though ). I would go with the Redsnapper tripod. For the head a gimbal type is preffered by many however i use a Giottos series 2 ballhead and its fine even with the Sigma 120-300 on which is very heavy. Only now am i moving to a Gimbal head and heavy duty tripod for my bigger lens.

Also look at getting a decent beanbag as they make the world of difference.
