Which would you choose for horse sports

Tough call on this one as the 'reach' of the crop sensor on the 400D will be very useful for polo and both cameras will be fine for outdoor showjumping but if you plan to do any indoor events the 5D will be your camera of choice for the high ISO capability (in saying that, I have no idea what it is like on the 400D but I presume nowhere near as good) as the lighting used in indoor arenas is usually very poor.

Have to agree! With good, well practiced timing, you won't be needing to rely on fps either...so the 5D should win there too :)
 
Choosing between a 400D and a 5DII? No question a 5DII every time. Why you'd even consider a 400D against a vastly superior 5DII is intriguing.

A 5DII will do everything you want and more, with much better image quality.

You may also want to consider what lenses you want to go with it. Work out how far you are from the subject and select accordingly. Polo is a bit of a nightmare as the action is often a long way away, so 300mm is minimum. A Sigma 100-300 F4 is a good bet for flexibility. I'd steer away from a Canon 100-400 as I've seen lots of poor shots from them. A 300 2.8 works well and you can pop an extender on it with little IQ loss. Depends on your budget really.

For indoor stuff, the 5DII will serve you very well with an excellent high ISO capability. You'll need a fast lens again, but wont need so much length so a 70-200 2.8 would work well.

How much money do you have again? :D
 
5DII for all the reasons stated above, I might add that a 40D is ok.
 
Full frame and for sports you want a D3 actually :D

That comment is probably referring to a comparison with the 1D series. Indeed the 1DIII would be better than the 5DII for sports (speed, handling etc), but the 5DII will knock socks off the 400D for everything including sports.

Sounds like you need to make a note of what the requirements are that you need, and then choose the camera accordingly, rather than choosing on comparisons that are not relevant to your situation.
 
I was just wondering why Kerioak hasn't include the 450D or 50D in the selection, both camera's would offer a better camera to compare the 5D MkII with.

I would have to agree, yours camera choices are chalk and cheese at the moment
