Another from Shetland and a new species for me.

EOS-7D, EF 500 f/4L IS, 1.4x extender, handheld from vehicle

Although the whimbrel is a Schedule 1 bird, this was a non-breeder.

Good one, Paul.
Good composition and background nicely blurred.

i haven't even heard of a Whimbrel before, never mind seen one Paul.

i love this one (y)

Beautiful shot, love the natural setting with plenty of detail!

Thanks guys. They were lovely to see and, as noted, compliment the heathland really nicely! I've got others with it calling but they are not quite right from a compositional point of view. I may find one on a second look.

John - these were on Fetlar, near the airstrip

Thanks guys

John - we slowed to about 45! Seriously, the vehicle was moving to keep up with the bird as it walked. Handholding a 500 gets tiring pretty quickly. It was out of the open door of a minibus, so nothing to really rest the lens on.

Really good capture Paul and they blend into there surroundings so well...seen and photographed one of these on Mull unfortunately it was at distance but a first sighting for me. very similar to the Curlew but the call sets it apart along with the shorter bill and slender body....(y)
