has anybody used one, what is your experiance of them, ie do they work or just a bit of a gimic
white balance lens caps

I have one. To be honest I rarely use mine. It was just a cheapo one from eBay since I couldn't bring myself to pay the money being asked for the Expodisc.
In general I find it gets things a bit colder than I would like. 9/10 I just shoot RAW and sort it out in PP anyway. Occasionally I get it out if I remember.
