I am really thinking calibrate to the camera is next step.. should have worked as is... but am convinced thats what will be needed
 
The issue here is,

If you get it calibrated to Camera 1 it may not work with Camera 2 or any onther camera for that matter.

If they calibrate Camera 1 will all your other lenses by sharp on Camera 1.

If you and Canon have tried calibrating it and it's still not functioning correctly then there is something wrong with the lens somewhere!

For a lens of that cost/calibre that is only coming up for two years old to have these issues is quite unacceptable for a pro user!

Must be a right PITA.

I did thunk of that :) It makes a backup scenario useless :(.. I have no plans for the distant future to replace that camera as the next one up is FF and would make my 400 down to around a 300.. not good... It would be limiting :(

This is somehting I would be checking first.. I would absoloutly 100% not want them to change anything in the camera as i am more than happy wiht how it owrks with other lens.. more than happy

I feel like a big soft geek..but I was well upset this morning when I tried it.. well upset.. no tears.. just upset :(


Also cominmg up to a long bank holiday weekend.. so timing is poor for sending and getting back :(
 
When you driving down Tony, im off down for 4 nights on Saturday for the royal jobbies.

Im dropping my D3S and my 400mm for a once over at Lehmanns on the way down as theyre the only one open, would have liked to have taken them to Fixation but closed from tomorrow until next Wednesday

well the CPS guy said he would look into it and phone me back...he didnt so i phoned this morning.. turns out he is on holiday today and wont be back until wed given the long weekend... so would have been 6 days to get back to me if then ..

So I explain it all again to this new guy who puts me through to the tech dep ( i think at elstree) lady takes all the details and says she will send me a UPS label so i can send the lens back.. she will send me that in half an hr ... that was 3 hrs ago..

Should I laugh or Cry ?

Try and escalate it , someone must be in charge of them down there
 
If its any help, i had a Canon 400 which was a frigging nightmare, wouldnt focus on anything, had it calibrated, serviced, calibrated to a brand new MKIII and an older MKIII, was *****, sent to Lehmanns, sent to Elstree, took it back to Lehmanns, finally decided to use the Calumet drop off point in Manchester and hey presto, a guy in there used to work at Elstree and asked about mjy problems, he asked if he could have a look at the lens as he thought he knew the problem, he came back 10 mins later and told me the IS motor had bust and even though i never ever used IS and it was always turned off it still slightly whirred away inside the lens and while doing so threw off the AF syytem, he sent the lens off with a note and hey presto 4 days later a brand new IS unit and a lens that focussed bang on at every aperture and every focal length.

Mind you i then ditched Canon for the first time and went to the dark side simply because they were incompetent.

I never use the IS but tried it when testing and it just seemed to stay on... just whirred away
 
That looks to be front focusing. And I am no expert. Good look in getting it sorted.

It is difficult from the photo you uploaded to work out what part of the hat you actually focussed on.

- there are many methods of attempting to work out if a lens is front or back focussing, my favourite, being the easiest to set up and the results are repeatable is to use a Breakfast cereal box with a ruler inclined by the side - you can see illustrative examples here from post 40 onwards by Richard/HoppyUK & Tim/Tdodd

- in essence the procedure is the camera (on tripod) needs to be 'square' on to the box, focus on the writing on the box with the ruler positioned at 45 degrees - noting which number on the ruler is lined up with the front of the box and then later by zooming in you can more easily see if the lens is front or back focussing.
 
its a 400mm lens and i dont own a tripod... have a few more tests before weekend.. somehting going away on monday.. might be the IS motor even though i dont use it... gonna do more testing before weekend

no point sending nayhting off this week with the 2 day holidays ..

How about using 2 chairs respectively for the camera and box placed on level ground about 60 feet apart in lieu of a tripod?
 
I only use my 400 2.8 IS on one of my MKIV's, It does not appear to focus as accurately on my other MKIV body as it does on the first one. Saying that the 70-200mk2 works fantastically on both of them. , as does the 24-70L.

I can always check this too as I have two differnet file prefixes set for each body...ie TUG1 for one body and TUG2 on the other.

I read somewhere that the calibration latitude may be at one extreme on the body whilst at the other extreme on the lens, Both items would be in tolerance but when put together would be out of tolerance from a focus accuracy point of view.

The only way around this is to get both body and lens into the service centre to be calibrated together.

I think if CPS are footing the bill for postage Tony, then that is definitely the way to go.

well as the lens came back as A-OK I decided to get one of the cameras done.. I got it calibrated cleaned and tested...

so both the 400 lens and a 1dmkIV have been cleaned calibrated checked and tested....

still not right :(

so canon have paid for the postage and i sent the 400mm back wiht explanation how they already ahd it once.. how i then got a camera calibrated.. how other lens are tack sharp even zoom at f2.8 all sharper than this...


went monday.. on its way back now.. the paper work i got.. under the charge bit.. where it would say warranty or chargable.. it says redo repair ... so probably not going to charge..

should get thur/fri so hopefully its finally fixed..
 
Mine fell over the other day.... I was expecting the worse...Luckily its still spot on ... I was having kittens worrying about how much it was going to cost me... A lesson learnt. Make sure you puy it in the case when not in use.

Seems you really are having a bad experience with the guys at Elstree.

I had a similar experience back in 2007 but, it was in the middle of the 1D MKIII fiasco and trips to Esltree service centre were almost daily. I did manage to get a working camera... after 6 months and 5 copies :gag:


Since then, I have to say that other repairs have been carried out promptly and efficiently.
I am at a lost as to why you are having so much trouble with their service :shrug:

I hope you get it sorted out ;)

I had a simmilar mkIII experience until canon offered me a B class replacement.. ie one not used but not new... sent back from a store camera.. that took me months :(
 
Yeeeeeagh! second times a winner... absoloutly pin sharp at f2.8 ... just stuck the x2 extender on and its very nice every shot at f5.6..

well happy.. no charge... but why couldnt they do it first time..loking forward to cricket this weekend now :)
