Good morning all,

A quick question, why are reverse grad filters so expensive and are there any alternatives to getting the same results?

Many thanks
Simon

Regular grads are produced using gravity (a free resource requiring no calibration) whereas reverse grads need a far more involved process with a much higher reject percentage.

Software packages offer reverse grads that are as simple as regular grads in their methodology.

I don't often use grad filters anymore as taking three exposures a couple of stops apart does a better job (ie increases dynamic range by about 4 stops).

I'd bracket, combine in post and leave the filters at home. Obviously doesn't substitute for polarisers or plain NDs.

Never use grads but used multile exposures in the past. However, no need for this anymore as my 5D4 has almost 14 stops dynamic range so easy to capture entire range of scene in Raw and adjust in the Raw editor. If you are using Jpeg on your camera you can still combine multiple exposures.
