Why can't I access HDR in D600 Shooting Menu

Hi
When I go to my D600 shooting menu to the HDR option it is greyed out. When I try to select it I get a message in a white box saying
'THIS OPTION IS NOT AVAILABLE AT CURRENT SETTINGS OR IN THE CAMERAS CURRENT STATE'
What could this mean. Nothing jumps out at me. It is NOT in auto ISO

Are you shooting in RAW? I've got the feeling you can only do HDR when shooting jpg only.

Hi guys a great hole in one! You're spot on. Switch to JPEG only and it works!
I had set for JPEG plus RAW.
How the hell am I going to remember that

Simple solution don't shoot in camera HDR do it in post where you have loads more control and can use RAW for an even greater dynamic range.
