Why is my D3000 doing thus?

Yes
I put my Macro Lens on and it told me to "lock lens aperture ring at minimum aperture".

I just put my new 50mm on and it said the same.

Is it bust or is it something I'm doing?

If you have an older af-d lens with the aperture ring near the mount you need to set this at the smallest aperture which I think is 22 its normally on yellow while the rest of the numbers are white.

Thanks - the macro lens was def not making the camera do this in the summer - I used it a lot. The 50 only came this morning.

Does your lens have an aperture ring? (a row of f/stop numbers by the mount of the lens)

Yes both lenses do, the macro is a Tamron 90mm.

If the lens has an aperture ring then it needs to be locked at the smallest setting, otherwise you'll get the fEE error.

Thank you, I imagine then it was just set there by chance in the summer when I was using it.

Glad to know my camera isnt faulty.

Also the "why" bit - it's because setting it at minimum aperture, in your Tamron's case at f/32, allows the camera to control the aperture electronically, so you choose the aperture via the camera rather than via the lens aperture ring.

For this reason many lenses have locks so the aperture ring stays locked at minimum aperture, although I can't tell from pictures whether the Tamron does.

On a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 it looks like this:

, just below the "1.8D" is where the toggle is.
