Wide angle for D700

24mm was allways regarded as a wide,wide in film days [i wish i hadnt sold mine now]

i use a 20mm f2.8 and its superb i dont feel the need for anything wider as it wouldnt be used that much.have you seen the size of these primes?so much easier to carry around,so i do.

I'd forgotten about the Nikkor 20/2.8, looks like good value for an FX wide angle for less than £500.

It would be the same as using a 13.3mm lens on a DX body. I remember I used to have the 12-24/4 DX lens that I used on my old D70s and 12mm seemed very wide, so I'd imagine that 13.3 would still seem pretty wide.

The low weight & bulk is another plus of course.

Im really torn still. The sigma 15-30 looks really good for what I want, except you cant use filters on it. The Nikon 18-35, has the 77mm filter thread I want, but isnt all that wide (compared to the other options), costs more and as you have demonstrated appears to have pretty major distortion.

The other options are either to expensive or have a 82mm thread.

Im thinking I should just hire the 14-24 for the day and have done with it.

No, my copy isn't 'a bad one' - this lens is well known for it's unusual distortion profile (those who don't see it are the smart ones, who just shoot cows with enormous noses , or beach scenes with endless amounts of horizon :|. It's only when you take pictures that are 'geometrically dependant' that you begin to see that you begin to realise that you may be holding the wrong tool for the job .

As I said before, I don't want to put you off this lens - you can get a used one for under £300 and work minor miracles with it (unless you want your straight lines to be straight). Even Ken Rockwell bonk marks it down for its distortion properties (Link ...).

Anyway, as if I haven't done enough to put you off yet , you can buy my mine for £240 (I paid £340 for it) and find out for yourself :shrug:!? No "money back guarantee" though .
