Wide Angle Lens advice

I would like to get a wide angle lens for my Canon and have been looking at the Sigma 10-20mm. Now because I am working overseas I can get one TAX free and this will work out at about 260 pound brand new.

My questions are.

1. Would any of you recommend this lens, or would you recommend something else?

2. Is the price I can get it for good?

Thanks in advance.

They're ok. Tamron, Tokina and Canon all have similar lenses.

£ 260 is OK as well. Retailing with tax at around £ 320

However, unless you pay VAT on your way into the UK (if applicable) Sigma UK won't honour the warranty.

Nice picture.

Actually I did rule out the Canon based on it's price and reading reviews they seem to be fairly close. Some reviews even seem to give the Sigma an edge in some areas. While I do think reviews are important I don't think you can beat personal views from actual users. Regarding the warranty that will not be a problem because it will be purchased from a UK retailer and then I claim the TAX back.

Had this lens just under a year and love it! Solid and very well made, fast USM motor, the Canons version looked very plasticky to me.

the Canons version looked very plasticky to me.

I have the Canon 10-22 and there is nothing plastic about this lens (apart from the lens cap ;) )

Just purchased the Sigma 10-20 for my D300 and it is a cracking lens.

Great pic Vulcan

Thank you for all your comments. You have made my mind up. I will order the Sigma at the weekend.

Even though you've made up your mind, I'll just offer my recommendation for the Sigma 10-20mm - great lens!

I've got the Sigma and I love it. I got it off amazon for £291 only a couple of weeks ago. Reading reviews you will find that most of them find little difference between the Canon & Sigma and the price probably plays a big part in most peoples decisions. The Tokina 11-16mm is rated as the sharpest in the crop UWA arena but it's price is similar to the Canon and also the range is quite short. So all in all I don't think you can go wrong with the Sigma. There are people who will talk down any 3rd party product no matter how good it is simply because it doesn't bear the Canon branding but if you try it out for yourself you won't be disappointed.

I too have the 10-20 and it's a great lens with a couple of caviats...

... It took 3 copies for me to get a good one so make sure you check it thoroughly

... 10mm tends to produce a little too much distortion for my liking (although some really like the effect the distortion creates). I stick to 12mm where distortion is insignificant

I ordered the Sigma a few days ago after discounting the Sony 20mm and am just waiting for it to arrive. Just like you i had the dreaded which one dilema and after reading what seemed hundreds of reviews, decided to bite the bullet and get it.

pay a bit more and get the Canon.

From Warehouse Express at time of writing: -

Sigma 10-20 £311.99

Canon 10-22 £649.99

A BIT?????

<strokes 10-22mm> I'm lucky i got it for the price of the sigma - even if it was 2nd Hand

I had the sigma before I went 5D and it was a great lil lens, couldn't fault it at all. For £260 it's a great buy.

Edit:
<-----In fact I think that photo was taken using it.

Strewth that's really steep for the 10-22 glad I got mine back in May off Kerso!

My Sigma turned up today. After a quick play with it on my 50D I'm left wishing I'd bought it years ago :)

after seeing this thread i think this and the nikon 50mm are gonna be my next buys

I'm loving the wide angle only got mine a week or so back but its been on it ever since, the sigma 17-70 has really taken a back seat!
