Wide Angle Lens for Action Sports

Hey all

Just looking for a bit of advice regarding a possible new lens.

Im looking to get a wide angle for shooting action sports, mostly Mountain Biking, and I'm hitting a wall. :bang:
I cant seem to find any reviews regarding performance in a sporting environment and I really want to be sure of what I need before I drop what is sure to be a sizable wedge of cash.

Anyone have any experience or insider tips that would help me out?

I was kinda looking to spend around £300. I dont mind buying second hand. Was looking at a Sigma 10-30 4.5-5.6 but didnt really like the aperture figures. The Nikon 10-24 looks great but im not sure I could find it within my budget

How wide?

Nikon 17-35 is a good fast AFS driven lens or the Nikon 24-70 AFS - both are f2.8 which is what you will need in the woods.

*edit* just spotted your budget... neither will be obtained for that kinda sum!

Tokina 12-24 f/4 fits into your budget - probably the sharpest 3rd party offering, although not the widest - but I think you have to get the mk2 version for it to AF on a D5000. Other than, I'd stretch for a Nikon 12-24 f/4 (amazingly good lens, probably the best UWA), which you can pick up for between £425-£450 used.
 
Hmm, for £300 you might be struggling! Are you planning on using flash? If so, it's not quite so important, but in a dense wood you'll be struggling with f/5.6!

Tokina make some fast wide lenses, the 11-16mm f/2.8 springs to mind, have you had a look at that? Probably a bit out of your price range, but would do nicely I imagine :thumbs:

Add some off-camera flash and the aperture becomes less critical. But at 10-20mm you're going to be under the wheels.
 
If you want to go mental wide super distorted up close... get the Nikon 10.5mm fisheye. Pretty cheap and a lot of fun - I love mine - got some proper bonkers motorsport with it, but you have to mind you don't get your head knocked off!
 
Thanks for all the input folks!

The reason for the budget is due to me being a job-less student!!

My off camera flash set up should be complete fairly soon, My triggers are going to be an 18th birthday present next Thursday. (Interfit Strobies, Anyone had any experience with these? Couldnt really justify going for wizards)

Any people here looking to sell off any W-Angles?
