Hi,

Im looking to get a wide lens. Now i hear about fish eye lens and wide angle lens. Which is better to go for?

Im currently using a canon eos 550d. Going on holiday in the summer, so would like a good wide angle lens. I currently have a kit lens 18-55mm, thats as wide as i have, other lenses are the nifty fifty and a 55-250 telephoto lens.

I ask, would an 18-55 lens be sufficent enough for good wide angle photos? I have a budget of around 300/400 to spend IF i end up deciding i would like a wider angle lens. Anyone got any photos from a kit lens at 18mm and something alot wider so i can compare.

How do fisheye and wide angle lens compare in terms of quality and price?
 
best advice really is to take a look at a few pics from both wide angled and fish eye lenses, personally I'd have a WA lens because I really don't like fish eye for anything other than sporty shots :) Cheers. Paul
 
A fisheye is a fun lens, and a nice addition to your kit bag, but only if you've either got a specific use for it, or you've got everything else.

Get a wide angle. You'll get far more use out of it.
 
There is a recent thread here with the same question. Personally I prefer the fisheye, and sold my WA.
 
A Sigma 10-20 can be picked up for under £300 in the classifieds. The Canon 10-22 would be more money. Both are for a crop body.
 
I'd go for a wide angle rather than a fisheye as I find the latter more useful although ultra wide angle lenses can take a bit of time to get used to as the geometric distortion they produce is extreme and can be difficult to work with or unsuitable for certain shots.
