Will extension tubes help?

Good evening all.

I'm after some nice close up shots of my models, or at least parts of them. but the problem I'm having with my 70-200 even at 200mm is the 1.4m minimum focal distance proving an issue.

Would sticking some extension tubes on help? I've never used them before, I know I will loose a stop or two of light, but that shouldn't be a problem when using studio flash.

Say I wanted a shot of just an eye, will going down to 1:1 be advisable?

What kind of tubes would be best?

Budget: Little as possible would be nice ;)

If you could give me some advice that would be great :)

Rob, I've just taken a shot with my 70-200 using all three extension tubes that I have - 13mm, 21mm and 31mm. Most extensions will come as a set of three in this sort of range. Mine are a set of cheapo Jessops, though I am not sure if they are still available, but I am sure that there are comparable sets out there at a similar cheap price.

I don't think you will quite get to 1:1, but it probably isn't far off. This shot was taken on a 5D so if you are using a crop camera, the magnification you will be able to achieve will be slightly better. Working distance was probably 12 inches or thereabouts.

Other than re-sizing for the web, this is the complete frame straight out of camera.

Hi Derek

Cheers very much for taking the time to test that, looks like more than enough magnification for me - I will have a hunt around and see whats available :)

Thanks DD - They don't seem to unreasonable, I found some similar kenko ones on the evilbay for around £100 which look tempting

Rob,

Your 50/1.4 will probably be a better option with the tubes and a full set of Kenko's will take you to around 1.4x lifesize. At this magnification, the working distance range will be quite small but if you put less than the full set on then it should give you what you need....slightly less magnification but an improvement in working fistance....ie, 36mm of extension will give you between .75x and .9x at 70-86mm.

Cheers Bob, useful info to know, maybe sticking them on the 50mm will be a better plan :)
