Will the Nikon 1 be ok for my dad?

Hello all.

My Dad is thinking of getting a Nikon1 with maybe the Ft1 adapter.

He wished to use the camera for general out and about shooting but also wishes to try to take some action shots at his local cricket club and his Grandson playing football.

Would the nikon1 be capable of taking such shots? I know he will have to use a long lens for the cricket and football but i thought that with a 2.7 crop it would not be to expensive for him to get a long enough lens.

He cannot cope with a DSLR as he has problems with his hands so i was hoping the Nikon 1 might work for him

You might be surprised the size of the nikon 1 cameras, have you handled one? They are not smaller than m/43 or nex cameras but lenses will be. I'm not sure what your dads hand problem is but he may still struggle. The AF speed is good but iso performance isn't great if you need to bump it up for sport photography. I would say a m4/3 would be a better balance of lens/camera size and iso performance. The new Olympus PEN E-PL5 has the same sensor as the om-d which performs very well. He really need to handle a few.

If I were you I would take your dad down to somewhere like Curry's and see what he is comfortable holding first and foremost. Next after looking at 2/3/4 then start thinking about the range the camera has. There might be a possibility that a compact camera would suit him better, they have a decent "reach" on them nowadays

Apologies i did not make myself clear my fault sorry.

I did take my Dad down to Jessops to try a few and the Nikon j1 was the most comfortable for him, i was just trying to find out if it was capable of doing what he wanted it to.

As he has always done a bit of photography and wanted to make sure it could produce good quality pictures if used properly.

He said he would be happy if it could turn out as good pictures as my 30D which i said it probably could as it was a lot newer sensor, but i may be wrong:)

The camera not always the one that makes pictures look nice .. if it is used in right time with the right setting many even non pro cameras are capable of a very good pictures.
 
its not the camera that makes good photos its the person behind it that does

The new Nikon V2 may be better for your dad as it got a real good grip. I hate the styling but in your case it may work better for you.
 
I think the op is concerned about shooting speed. Most compacts fail to keep up with DSLRs when sports are concerned. How does the Nikon 1 keep up?

I had a 20D (very similar to the 30D) and I thought it was a very capable camera. I think that if you pixel peep the 30D may actually be better than all but the very best compact system cameras at base to mid ISO's. If you can avoid pixel peeping I think that just about any recent camera will probably produce images which are very nice indeed at reasonable full image screen and print sizes.

I hope he gets a lot of enjoyment from whatever he gets :D
