It will fit your D40, and it will work, but only in manual focus.
(Unless I'm very much mistaken, which is possible I might add!!!!)

Also.. lol, I've NEVER bought anything online before. Is every site that claims to sell this lens safe?
 
There's no way you can guarantee that every site selling anything is "safe" - any business can go bad, and you might get unlucky!

Something to note - the item you linked to is not actually sold by Amazon, but one of their partners.

And the lens won't auto focus on your D40, for that you'll need AF-S designated lenses....
 
if you can spend every minute of every day refreshing the sales section on this forum you should get one for £50-60 but they usually get sold in about 2 mins!!
