Windows networking setup help needed.

Anyone any good at networks?

I am competant with PCs etc but need help setting up my laptop to open images stored on my desktop or ext HD wired to desktop, Both running vista.

Also after setting up printing from laptop if poss.

Ive opened networking on laptop and it sees the desktop but no images show up, any help please. Im fed up with running between the 2 devices and carrying pics on usb pen to transfer.

And just to add to your confusion antivirus software with a firewall may well decide to protect your computer from others on your own private network so you may have to allow local sharing there too.

Networking is usually pretty simple but sometimes it can be a pita :)
 
ok, all is ticked on both devices allowing sharing, nothing happening, should i be linking to the media on tower from laptop? the other option of tower says no can do
 
Not a Vista man myself, but have you tried running the network setup wizard and are both machines part of the same Workgroup?

(I may be talking *******s, but if it were XP that's what I'd check)
 
right so on the computer with the files (bare with me im on Windows 7 but its mostly the same)...

right click the folder you want to share, go properties, sharing tab, click share button, in the dropdown select everyone, click share, click OK/close.

on the machine you want to access from...

go to start -> computer, expand network, you should have your other computer name there expand that, you should have a folder there called whatever the folder is called on the other computer?
 
ok done that, when i do last bit by clicking on tower tab it comes up warnin saying

TOWER is not accesable, you might have not permission to use network resource, conatct admin of server. Logon failure, user account restricted. possible reasons are blank passwords not allwed, logon hour restriction or policy restriction has been enforced.

How easy was that, I realise now. But really couldnt see why, Thanks alot mate.
Maybe another daft question is will it take up any memory on laptop?
