Wireless shutter release/trigger for Canon 5dc - Yongnuo RF-603 ok?

I have a 5d mk i (aka 5dc), and am looking to get a wireless shutter release for it. There are a few very cheap options on amazon with mixed reviews (£10-15ish) because of their build quality/reliability.

However, paying a bit more i could pick up a Yongnuo RF 603 transmitter/receiver set that I know I'll probably use at some point in the future for flash, so would be a good investment, however I'm confused about whether it actually can trigger the 5d shutter remotely, and whether this can be done with a flash on camera also, and if I need to purchase an extra cable to make it work...

Any info clarifying these points would be great

I have RF-602s, but I'm sure the setup will be the same for RF-603s.

For remote wireless release you will need one trigger pair plus a cable to connect the receiver to the camera. If you want to take the flash off camera you will need a second trigger pair operating on a different frequency.

In the picture below you see the flash atop an RF-602 receiver. This is paired with the transmitter in the camera hot shoe. Plugged into the camera is the remote shutter release cable, which has an RF-602 receiver at the other end. Finally there is a second trigger, which is used to fire the camera remotely. When the shutter trips the camera will fire the second trigger, which in turn will fire the flash.

If you have everything on the same channel then the flash will fire as soon as you trip the shutter, but by the time the mirror is up and the shutters have opened the flash will have been and gone. This is why you need two pairs running on different channels.

Thanks so much for that explanation and picture, it is invaluable. Am I right in thinking, then, that with just one trigger/receiver, I would be able to fire the camera shutter alone? I have seen a number of people on various websites having problems with a 5d mk i and successfully doing that (ie just for remote shutter release), but it works fine on your 5dii like that? Think perhaps some people may have got a bad batch...

Well I don't have a 5D Classic, only a 30D, 5D2, 5D3, 7D and 1D3 but I can't imagine any reason why the original 5D should be any different. The cable connection is the same for the 1D, 5D, 7D and xxD series cameras. It is a different cable for xxxD and xxxxD bodies.

Here is a listing on eBay for the lead required to connect an RF-602 (RF-603 may be different) to a 5D and many other Canon DSLRs from xxD models and upwards.

Maybe the people experiencing difficulties have the wrong expectations of what can be accomplished with a single trigger pair, or even one transmitter and two receivers.

Thanks Tim, have ordered the rf 603 with the 5dii cable, as you say I've had a look at images online and can't see that it's any different. Thanks again for your help!
