Wordpress, Joomla etc ?

My hosting company is drastically increasing its prices so I am going to move my website.

As it will mean rebuilding (I assume) I thought I would ask if there are benefits of Joomla over Wordpress or any other software. I do sell some prints from my site (currently using JAlbum) so this is also something that would be good to be made more streamlined.
 
Depending on how your site is built you don't necessarily need to rebuild it. It might be a simple case of just copying all files across.

Not really sure wht you mean by that as surely either you have the offline version where you created it, or if it only exists online and you want the sourcecode you can view that with almost any browser at your site, why would you need to search words to find your own site?
Just curious and wanting to make sure you have what you think you do and what is needed to move ok.

What code ar you talking about?

Your current site is built with wordpress so it should be easy enough to transfer from one host to another.

If you are looking for a new host then I would suggest Hostgator, if you sign up with them they also have an option where they will move your website from your old host to them free of charge.

If you need to - You can also export all of the content from your current install to a new one, again, if needed. There are various ways of doing it without too much work.

Also, as Keith says, your homepage is acting up - It's rendering the title and menu twice for me?
 
Wordpress is great for blogs and blog format sites with news feeds. Very easy and intuitive for new users to pick up and configure. Ideal if you want to make regular posts of your latest pics and post up short galleries of new content.

Joomla is more powerful and can present data in far more ways with far more customisability. But is far more complex to get started with. A full portfolio site with larger galleries, maybe even e-commerce included.

I have even built sites that use each to their best potential. A Joomla driven site where the blog link is to a Wordpress blog in an identical style to the website and with a matching menu. So you switch between joomla and wordpress and back again without being aware of it.

Long story short - unless you have good reason to, create a wordpress site and then when you are happy with it, start looking into Joomla as a longer term solution.
 
I disagree. Wordpress is more than suitable for so called "static" sites, it's not just a blogging platform anymore.

That's not to say Joomla isn't good, but if you already know and understand Wordpress, and it does everything you need, is it worth changing over to a new system and having to re-learn everything from scratch?
 
having used wordpress and joomla, id go with wordpress too. its easier than you might imaging once you get into it
 
If your hosting is cPanel managed then do a full backup and download it to your computer.

If you move to a new host that uses cPanel then they can restore the backup you made and everything should be exactly the same including email accounts, databases, passwords etc...
 
A great saying that I find applies to web sites and computers especially is "if it isn't broken, don't fix it".

Wordpress has many nice abilities, plugins, and features that are also covered well by joomla, there is some more complexity from joomla tho, so you may want to bear that in mind, but when you get your new hosting sorted, if it allows multiple databases and sub domains you could create your own little joomla test area and go have a play.
 
I think overall the key difference is that Joomla when you are more experienced with it has more flexibility. You can make it do virtually anything if you are willing to get deep down into the code. A Joomla site need not have that trademark look that you can identify at a glance. Most Wordpress sites on the other hand have a look/feel that I instantly spot and am not so keen on.
 
I think the same applies with wordpress JCoquillon. Once you've got your head round the plugin arch you can make it do anything. If you want to get rid of the stereotypical wordpress look i guess you just need to start from scratch with a template.

If you're already on WordPress, you're probably best off sticking with it.

I would NEVER recommend Joomla for anyone that isn't a techie. It's simply miserable to administer.

For a usable administration interface, have a look at DotNetNuke - that is, if you're looking around and interested. It's powerful like Joomla, but it's actually usable by mere mortals. :)
 
I personally prefer Joomla, however I've had to go through a lot to make it do what I want.

Wordpress seems easier to use just not as flexible.

Also look at Concrete 5, Drupal, Typo 3 and some of the other CMS softwares, they are like cameras, until you try them you wont know if it suites you.
