I am just been tinkering with my site and noticed WP requires an update, whilst reading it I came across the part about needing to backup my data, I cant figure out how to do it. Can anyone please point me in the right direction please.

Hi Julian,

I back wordpress up by going to the 'Tools' menu from the dashboard and then selecting export. Use the default settings and click 'Download Export File'. Save this to you PC.

but

going against wordpress's advice for the minor updates I normally just click to update without a backup first. (I know it'll bite me one day but the latest wordpress version gave me no issues)

Cheers Hugh, that was relatively painless, much appreciated mate.

I'm a bit maverick when it comes to Minor updates as well (i.e. 3.0.3 -> 3.0.4), haven't backed up before upgrading... It's only usually when the update affects the database that i take a backup, as I can always restore the previous versions files from a Wordpress download anyway

Cheers Matty, I have just done the updates aswell.

I can't remember the name of the plugin but there is one that you can schedule database updates which it then send to your chosen email account.

Sweet, essentially if you want to back up one thing it's got to be the database. Everything else can be rebuilt but the data you'll lose for ever if **** hits the fan.
