I have a few questions about working over in the US.

I realise I cant work over there unless I have a visa, not sure which kind i need to get though.

Also, if I go over there and take some pictures of a model, no money changes hands and the images go on my portfolio, is this legal?

You're right about needing a VISA to work, for types I'd speak to the US embassy.

For the model with no money changing hand, I'd just shoot on the tourist VISA waiver

I'm pretty sure it's legal. If you arent gaining anything currency wise then its like taking holiday snaps. A few fashion photographers I know go over just for TFP and they just go on a tourist visa.:)

Get yerself a business visa - no more difficult to obtain than a tourist one - and you can work for up to 3 months (if my memory serves me correctly). I did that on and off for about a year before getting a green card and moving to the USA back in the '90's ... beginning to wish I'd stayed there too :cuckoo:

If you earn any money whilst working over there then be prepared to pay income tax on it before you return to the UK. Not sure what the tax free limit is but the American embassy in London will give you all the info. I was working for a UK company and paying tax here so it wasn't an issue, but the rules may have changed since then.

I worked in Louisiana in 2003 on a normal 90-day visa - prior to the current regime - and I had to leave after 88 days and return a week later for the last month to finish the job (non-photographic, Oil industry).
