Would the 16-35 2.8 be better than the 24-105 with it's IS?

Im off to Germany in December as per another thread. I am still pondering if I should get some faster glass for the low christmas light lit displays and buildings.
I would also like to do a bit of landscape stuff, shore scenes etc, and kinda feel that the 24-105 would probably be ok for those tasks while I'm into my "landscape playing period"......I have a 5D mk3, and the 24-105 is so much wider than it was on the 7D.
But will it be wide enough for tighter street shooting at the christmas markets, and would it be fast enough? I am thinking that the iso can be pushed a lot higher on the 5D that it could on the 7D, and coupled with the IS, it may do the job. But I can't help thinking that the 16-35 2.8 would be a better choice, depending upon how it would perform without the IS, as I won't be able take a tripod (wife's orders).......

The 24 is quite wide, I think if you we're to travel light which I assume you are the 24-105 is the way I would go, we managed for years without IS at longer focal lengths at 105mm IS is not needed if you keep your shutter speed around the same. And I'd your shooting landscape, you should hide a small tripod in your bag then stick it on and turn IS off anyway

I think you will find that the 2 stops the IS will give you on the 24/105 just about balance out the f4 to f2.8 on the 16-35 and as you rightly say 24mm is wide on FF.
Could you get away with a monopod or a walking pole with a camera screw in the top ,just to give that bit extra support?

Thanks for the replies...I think I'll stick with the 24-105 for the Germany trip, and maybe pick up a 17-40 at some stage when I get the taste for landscapes.

But that leaves one problem, what to do with the funds put aside for immediate retail therapy.........I reckon I'll get a 70-200 2.8 Mk2 and sell my 70-200 F4
