the above mentioned old camera, to be used by a friends daughter for a school project where she takes pics and develops them herself at school. it needs a clean so i'm told, it is worth using or should she go for a more modern point and shoot 35mm?

She could use that if the meter is accurate, I don't suppose she'll be wanting to meter by hand and then shoot.
The Rangefinder will have to work too, there's nothing wrong with old gear as long as it performs, its just so much easier not having to worry about it.

Electro is a nice rangefinder by all accounts. Good optics and a coupled rangefinder with parallax compensation.

I've been very tempted by a GTN on ebay more than once.

You may need a replacement battery for the 5.6 V PX32 Mercury battery that it was designed for.
