Steve - 40D, MP-E65, MT-24EX with DIY diffuser, 1/200, F11, ISO100, handheld. You can see what the setup is like in my siggy.

Flickr applies an unsharp mask to the resized images, which is probably why they look that way.

Lucien, higher mag shots tend to be softer due to diffraction as effective f number = set f number * (m+1). A bit of extra sharpening applied during PP.
 
WOW.... I jumped when this thread opened!!
What absolutely fantastic shots, focus spot on, lighting just right, detail is amazing....and judging by the number of wasps.... a VERY brave togger!!!
