What was your inspiration to start photography? What keeps you going? :)

I wanted to produce something of my own that I am proud of and would put up on my wall..... I keep going because these shots are few and far between and I keep looking to improve!

Our first dog, Luke.

I just had a film P&S when we had him. After we lost him I realised just how few photos of him we actually had and got a little Fuji bridge camera so that we'd have more to remember our other dogs by.

I soon got hooked and wanted to start doing something more "arty" then just memory shots.

Lately I've done a few bump to baby photoshoots and that's the thing that's currently keeping me going. There's just something about those that's really addictive.

Friesian cows and rusty farm machinery was my first roll of film. ...Although things don't seem to have changed much because I recently got inspired by a shot of a white dog in a black tarmac car park wandering towards the marked parking white lines, fantastic shot although it might not sound it .....only I cant find it again to show you how fab it was :gag: ...but I remember it well and would do anything to find anything anywhere near as fantastic.

My inspiration at first was my youngest brother Andy, he was always into photography and I loved the shots he took.. he was the first person who gave me an idea that you could shoot more than snapshots.

Later getting my Nikon FM, I spent a fortune on film and processing I shot so much, but I was happy just walking around with a 50mm on and would shoot whatever caught my eye.

Motorbikes.

Back in the 70's I used to work in a motorbike dealership. I was really into bikes.
I remember a marketing leaflet for the Honda 750 4 cylinder. It was a shot taken at night in the rain.
Static bike, obviously set up for the picture. Couldn't stop looking at/into it.
For the 1st time I realised I had to start taking more than point and squirt.

Still never tried to recreate that effect, but it's still in my minds eye...

I completed a 4 year IT degree part time and my career was going steady and hit a bit of a boring rut to be honest. I decided that I needed to do something that i would find personal fulfilment in. Around the same time i was usher at a friends wedding and it just so happened that I had a lot of involvement with the Pro Tog doing their running for the day. I found the whole process fascinating and as it coincided with the arrival of my first son I decided to pick up a DSLR to document my new sons life. Since then it's grown into a bit of an obsession and I can't get enough of reading up and shooting all kinds of things. I'm coming to the end of my first photography college course and really enjoying my time with the camera.

The irony is that I'm now considering progressing onto a photography degree. The hobby that I took on to give me respite from the working life and study could ultimately lead to starting the process all over again albeit this time I would be doing it for me and not just to tick a box from a career perspective.

There's no one singular moment or subject that inspired me to start. My family always had cameras when I was a kid, and I used to use my dads old Halina, and then borrowed his Yashica before he bought me a Praktica SLR when I was 12. I've had cameras ever since. What imspires me to keep going? I can't imagine a life without photography - I love to document my life and my family, the world around me, and the things that interest me:)

My dad.

He was once a professional commercial and architectural photographer who also shot weddings and events in his spare time.

When I was about 10 I wanted to progress my photography so he bought me an all manual Praktica to learn on.

Impressing him is still an inspiration, but also I find being out alone shooting landscapes very restful compared to my normal life of rushing about, blackberry in action 24 hours a day, working and travelling.
