Well, having signed up to this, and being partly responsible, by way of putting Kelly's jumbled thoughts into some kind of order, here is my thread, all ready and waiting for whoever my lovely partner is to give me my first challenge.

I generally specialise in Weddings/portraits, and urban landscapes, so the idea is that you won't be seeing any of those in this challenge, instead I shall be stepping out of my comfort zone and trying my hand at other stuff.

I plan to produce a small portfolio for each monthly topic and post them here and on my 'hobby' blog HERE

So, who is my partner, bring it on please, I have plans to make :D

Oh, Here is the link to the original idea [Thanks Matt] Step Out of your Comfort Zone

What's this challenge about Yvonne, I'm already committed to my 366, and POTY so I'm not sure if I can commit to a third project  but I'll be happy to offer up a few suggestions if you like (y)

Great choice Yv (y)

If you'd been going on Sunday I'd have said hi in between crashes :D. Have you had a look at some mtb photography for inspiration?

Good luck Yvonne (y)

Can't do Sunday, got a client meeting, or I would have done - you aren't planning on being there again over the next 3 weekends or so are you?

Not really Yv, replied to your PM though with some inspiration for you. Good luck (y)

Well I did it!!

Now I don't claim any great skills at this, but given it was a very cold, mainly over cast day and visitor number were on the very low side, I still had great fun and grabbed a few nice 'snaps'. I learnt a few lessons, such as a shorter wider lens would have been useful, as would a waterproof to sit on, for the waiting around, and to get as low down as possible for some more dramatic angles on the more exciting bits that were edged with ribbon at [my] head height. There will definitely be a next time!

So, the best of my efforts.... I tried a range of compostions, angles, etc, to try and give an overall feel not just for the cyclists, but the landscape too. I am not always into 'frame filling' pictures for sports, I like to mix it up with being able to see more of the environment too.

Just for info really - all taken with D700, 70-200 - between ISO 400 and 800 and all have had small levels tweak, some have been cropped to get the composition I actually wanted but couldn't get for fear of being in a 'fally offy' zone or the dreaded red boundary ribbons. They have all had a very gentle tonal contrast applied just to give the a little bit of a boost.

The entire set can be seen on my Flickr Stream [link in sig] or HERE on my blog.

All comments/critique welcome (y)

Your off to a cracking start Yvonne, I think #4 is the best for colour, composition etc,
but the expression in #2 says it all for me,
the pleasure and the pain (y)

Some nice photos Yvonne, I think you've managed pretty well.

Love the expression in #2

I like a couple that you didn't chose to include (just personal preference)

Slightly left of field but this one might be my favourite (it's a toss up between this and the one above; I'm a sucker for a nice TroyLee ). It seems slightly better exposed on my screen and the colours don't look quite so cold - I'd have been tempted to warm them up a little bit either with PP or maybe a filter (not your fault, it's this miserable weather :bang: ).

(y) Thankyou, and I agree about the colour temp, I did warm most of them marginally, but there are a couple that could probably do with an extra nudge up the slider including that one.

I would really like to have a go at this using some flash at some point, but I think I would need a willing victim who is prepared for it going off as they came past. I saw enough tumbles without being the cause of them

I wouldn't worry too much about flash, most races I've been to have had togs with umbrellas flashing away - you don't really notice it when you're riding (y) (I probably would avoid it on the jumps though just in case ;) )

like them good attempt it isn't easy to do something outside your comfort zone the only thing i find a little distracting is the blue coat? in the back ground of the first shot let's see what feb can bring

I like them all - 4 is the best for me - a touch of panning, sharp centre and nice angle!

Well I managed it, though now begging Victoria for a subject rather then a random theme for March

The hardest thing was translating 'Time' into something out of my comfort zone. Anyhooo, finally decided to use the collection of watches and all sorts of random stuff hanging around our house to make up some still life images. I can quite conclusively pick holes in most of them, but as this isn't something I normally do, it is a start.

Probably not the best stuff I have ever done, but it was fun gathering the props together and feel better that I made the deadline, I was starting to get worried

This year London held its St Patricks Day celebrations on Sunday 18th in Trafalgar square, so I joined the throng to grab some pics for my culture theme.... of course, it does depend on how you define 'Culture' ;)

The whole set can be seen on my flickr, or with descriptions on the BLOG
