I'm sure a lot of you guys are familiar with the "zoom effect", where you manually alter the zoom during exposure. I was messing around looking at the different images you can produce with the technique, and I've posted the results here, in case you're interested!

Just a bit of fun, really, but it can produce some pretty odd images.

Interesting effect.
will add that to my list of 'must try's' :D
To get a sharper image at the centre, is it a case of not-zooming for half a second or so, then zooming smoothly until the shutter closes?

A steady hand is probably the most important thing for a sharp central image, and then the time to pause depends on the light conditions, but yeah, a slight pause, then a smooth adjustment (zooming out, rather than in) will produce a nice focused image with a residual outer 'ghost' image.

I have also heard that you can sharpen certain objects by introducing a flash at any given time during the exposure, but I haven't been able to give that a shot yet.

This is one of my attempts from a while back, Taken in a dark room, the orange trails are from candles and using a flash to freeze the subject.
