Zoom lens for Nikon 3200

Possibly planning a 3200 so suggestions on a good lens but not silly price and even 2nd hand and what type of lens does this take

It takes any nikon f mount lens, although if you want autofocus, you'll need AF-S lenses.

What zoom range and what budget? Any lens with variable focal lengths is a zoom lens, be it a 10-20 or a 300-800. Need more info from you to suggest anything relevant.

You are probably going to use one lens 95% of the time. Being in the same boat, I picked 18-105 instead of kit one and very happy with the purchase. For good review on lenses I'd suggest photozone.de (if not allowed to mention other sites, I'm asking mods to delete this msg).

Well sub £300 and you need an lens with in built motor for focus, is the D3200 body only then?

I'd suggest the Tamron 17-50mm constant aperture of f2.8 lens, can be had from digitalrev for £250 with VC(vibration control) if you are getting body only.

If you really want 70-300mm range I'd suggest sticking to the nikons 55-200mm af-s VR or 55-300mm af-s VR.
Which are £100/£180 for new, cash left for a prime, Id suggest 35mm f1.8 and 55-200mm Vr with only costing £250 for both:)

Youd get a Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 for around or just above £300 and it will be far superior to most of the 70-300's.

Tamron SP USD 70-300 is also a decent lens - around £200 used or £289 new (@Wex). But if you are happy with 200mm and can find a Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 for around £300 that would be an even better option.

This. It doesn't sound like you have a specific need, so while nice, a 70-200 2.8 is a big, heavy lens for a 3200. A 55-200 vr is a great lens and fits the body size a lot better. Also a sight cheaper as mentioned. The 70-300 is nice, but starting into the 'big' range again.

Thanks,
Rick

This.

I'd recommend the 18-200mm over all the above though. You can get on for 280 or so and it will cover most of what you will need for now.

I dont think a big heavy lens on a tiny body is the way to go...it'll only put you off taking it out.

I carry my d5100 with my sigma 70-200 all the time. I think it balances really well and is very easy to handhold, more so than the d700.
