Great set of photos.
Can highly recommend a visit. We went last June, looks like the weather was much kinder to you than it was to us.
We also visited the broch but unfortunately it was mostly covered in scaffolding.
We're in the process of organising a return visit in May next year.
That's brilliant. I've seen this behaviour in our garden, it's quite often the female trying to refuse a male's advances. They like playing hard to get. A female can have several broods a year, this is why there are so many small hoglets around in autumn. I over wintered 5 last year in my shed.
Luskentyre was one of our planned stopping points after a visit to the Harris gin distillery but the weather had other ideas. We certainly wouldn't have got anything like your stunning shot.
My long awaited trip to Lewis finally happened last week. While most of the UK was bathed in warm sunshine, I spent a wet & wild week in Stornoway.
One of the highlights of the trip was a visit to the standing stones at Callanish. Fortunately due to the weather, not many other people were there...
Great shots, love the little critters. If it is a regular visitor and if you get chance it might be an idea to weigh it. Hedgehogs need to be at least 700g to survive hibernation. They need all the help they can get at this time of year. Great to hear that you put food and water out for them...
Thanks for all your replies. Unfortunately badgers are one of the few predators that can open up a rolled up hedgehog. Our dog also gets quite excited when he sees one so we put him on a lead when we let him out for the loo after dark.
Its not hard at all to set them free, like you said Stuart...
WCMU on Saturday. Being able to release 4 hedgehogs I have been caring for since October. We found them in and around our garden and they were all too small to survive hibernation (under 300g). They are now a healthy 700g and now that the weather is improving and there is plenty of natural food...
