From Crop Sensor to Full Frame: a buyer's dilemma

I didn't mean to give that impression. Getting the focus wrong can't create noise. But, if you're looking for sharp shots at wide apertures, your AF system and technique need to be top notch. And full frame is more demanding of focus accuracy because you're using longer focal lengths for the...

From Crop Sensor to Full Frame: a buyer's dilemma

It really isn't. The overall sensor score is the same as the D3s! An amazing result for such a budget camera! And better than stuff like the D700/D3, which pros used for years (some even now) with fantastic results. It's amazing how people take for granted that you now get pro levels of...

Need help - Panasonic G7 and 14-140mm II

It looks like she's moved when she's taken the shot. Even though it's a low-res image you can see the camera movement. Have you got any more examples at higher shutter speeds?

    Canon PowerShot D30 for travelling?

Decent = not full of unwanted artefacts and grain, with controllable depth of field and pleasing lens rendering. I stand by that statement. By the way, believing in the opposite of my argument means that you think that small-sensor compacts deliver better photos than m43. Really? Or is that...

Need help - Panasonic G7 and 14-140mm II

You can tell from the blur it's either camera shake or shutter shock or a bit of both. You're not sure whether or not you used E shutter, so force it on for a bit and see what happens. Also - weird exposure settings! Each to their own but I don't know why you'd be at f10 in these circumstances...

    Canon PowerShot D30 for travelling?

"I'm resigned to image quality not being stellar." I wonder if you might regret that statement - tiny-sensor compacts are pretty crappy, so unless you absolutely have to have the underwater feature, you'd be much better off with something like an Olympus E-PM1 and 14mm prime. Not far off the...

    Workflow question (Mac users)

The point of having an online backup is that it's offsite, so if you're burgled or have a fire, the data is still safe. It's difficult to quantify to relative risks, but I would have thought Amazon losing my data is no more likely than having it burned or stolen at my end. Home backup combined...

    Workflow question (Mac users)

Well you know where they've been put using Lightroom just the same as any other method because you can select the exact location of the import. But the default of creating a folder structure based on date seems logical enough to me when combined with LR's catalogue function. Manually importing...

    F1 compact?

At every Grand Prix I've been to, there's been loads of amateur photographers with big lenses. It's the nature of the beast. I'd agree with the above - they're looking for cans of beer at the gate, not big lenses!

Ok am I being daft? D3300 to D7000 upgrade

Actually I think that focussing performance is one of the few decent reasons to upgrade. One thing the D3xxx series is not good at is focus - both speed and accuracy. My D3200 is relegated to landscape function for that very reason. Having said that, all DSLRs are clunky, cludgy things with...

Where do you back up your picture files?

Pedantic much?! Paradox's question was to do with Amazon Prime photo backup, which is unlimited only for photo files. Their Raw policy is thus: "Supported RAW File Types The following RAW photo files from the following camera models are recognised by Amazon Drive as a photo file; however...

    Which Nikon body?

This says it all. I first thought D700 - coming from film, a full-frame sensor seems to me a necessity. Conversely, perhaps very high resolution isn't, even 12MP is quite a sufficient upgrade. Basically - D700.

Anyone doing gigs/festivals/events get sick of the weight?

So, the festival season is in full swing and a few photo passes for music festivals have come my way. It's my favourite time of year, but... Maybe I'm being a weenie, but carting around DSLR kit gets old very quickly when you're looking at 12-hour days, and trying to have fun in between bands...
