I don't think any amount of HDR or any other process is going to do much for that white sky unfortunately. I think you have to have at least something going in the original shot for it to work well. Also the HDR version looks a little soft, did you use a tripod? One of the biggest...
No probs! I wanted to try and improve that shot - so I tried another approach with a B&W conversion and square crop - which I think looks better, although I'm sort of new to the scary area of B&W.
No, I haven't submitted them to any mags as yet - might do in the future.

They're all very good to me.. #2 looks the best visually to me, although it lacks some of the contast and colour of 1 & 3 - only by a touch mind. Great work!
