Looking at the image, the bridge and smooth portion of river are the most interesting areas. Try cropping as a portrait (no reason why a landscape can't be in portrait, it was a term coined hundreds of years ago!).
Probably be better in colour.
Definitely overexposed, or highlights need toning down.
Engineers POV. If it is an image that requires an exceptional high contrast (detailed structure) or benefits from the noir touch (portrait of an craggy or shadowed face) or there is naturally no colour (misty...
There is no such thing as bad light, just what you do with it.
The shadow is good but is a little bright on the top end of the whites and blues.
Try reducing brightness by about 25% and boost the contrast a little.
Mess around with the individual channels in the histogram, particularly low end...
If you are looking for inspiration, take a look at viewbug. It is a really good photo site, I stopped using flickr once I found it. Plenty of truly amazing photographers and images that will make you want to go out and get that Magical shot.
Crop the sky, the top portion has no texture and does not add anything. This will also give the image a panoramic look which suits tall structures, gives effect of height. Assume a long exposure was used as boats appear blurred (along with water which was probably the effect you wanted). Could...
Check file size. I just tried a download, 70kb. No wonder its pixelating.
Try this link, uploaded image there. https://drive.google.com/folder/d/0B-vjn2fAuUrtMjZtOTFXLTNoZTQ/edit
Give you an idea of location and subject. Not exactly the best specimen.
Grain is either patchy surface or dust on the sensor (recent trip to empty quarter uae). Did not adjust any dark areas other than rope and rusty strip on bow.
Does the file need to be jpeg to be uploaded or will raw work?
If has to be jpeg, will convert the raw image to a jpeg to upload.
Only boosted the boat, sky was pretty much untouched so as was.
Attempted off the hull. Blew out all of the highlights and looked like a daytime shot, even at 2 stops down. This was metered from the mid way out in channel.
Did not have much choice on time for shot, left work and drove straight to quay. The storm had just cleared and clouds had parted...
Where did I go wrong?
Shot taken just after sundown. Apparent golden hour
Apperture half open - f16, multiple Long exposures
Slight crop and a little dodging and burning.
What have I missed or not done right?
There are plenty of trainer style walking shoes. Merrel and karrimor both make decent shoes that won't hurt your pocket. Go outdoors and blacks both will be selling those types off this time of year.
