Building on the past two year's ETC Project challenge, we thought we would have a bit of an overhaul to make it less of a daunting project and more of a fun, inspirational thing to try.

So each month, we'll be posting an effect, technique or creative idea which give you inspiration to try something you haven't tried or thought of before. We've seen all the water splash fun and spinning wool but have you heard of timeslicing, the droste effect or how about making your own pinhole camera?

Well this thread will show you how to do these and with the staff and members (and the help of google) to guide you along the way, we'll soon get you stepping into a different, creative world of photography.

We'll use this thread for posting your photos, discussion of ideas and the technique and support and I'll create a thread per theme each month which you can add your photos, support each other and just have fun along the way.

The rules are just to have fun with it. You can try one month or you can try all the months. There's no limit on when you can try them. If for example you want to try the March theme but have the perfect idea for it in June, that's fine.

This month we are looking at Widfield Astrophotography. Here are some links that show you how:

There's also a great app that can help you find constellations etc. Google Sky Maps.

And it's ironic that I thought with the cold snap, there would be nice clear skies and since Saturday, it's been cloudy every night!

Plenty of time ;)

Thanks John. Very good resource there for people to use. I will add that to the OP.

Here's one I prepared earlier - does it count??
It is of Leicester Space Centre and is called:

Under alien skies

Haha nice try but no, it doesn't quite count ;)

There's no time limit on when you can do these :)

All I can say is......bloody difficult.....and was up to 2 am this morning trying to process.......nothing to show for it

Ah no, that sucks. Show us what you've got and we can tag a couple of our resident experts in and they can advise

Big problem was light pollution.....I was aiming for the milky way shot but it was in the wrong location apparently for a good shot...... Me thinks I need to wait until it is in an acceptable location and then photograph from somewhere like Dungeness

I think Sara told me it was better to wait til about May to try for a good shot of the Milky Way.

Maybe @swag72 or @jgs001 could jump in here for me before I misinform

Actually you might be right. I think Sara said summer. Not sure where I got May from
