I've just moved into a property which looks over a school field during the day i can see at least 6 red kites in view at a time, i have a 70-300mm tamron lens which i got with my 3100 when i brought it, it's sometimes good enough to get some good shots but i was wondering is it possible to use a 1.4 converter to get closer or am i just wasting my time?
 
Sorry to say, you can't use a converter on your lens.

Typically you need a constant aperture f/2.8 or f/4 lens to take a TC (although not all do).
 
so its just a matter of patience and waiting for the birds to come in a bit closer really

(y) never myself found any thing better than closer to the birds the better the result (y)
