Canon EOS 70D Owners Thread.

Hi Robin, I'm getting some good shots from the 300 f4L IS and 1.4x MkIII converter now, it just needs to be stopped down a bit to get the best quality shots from it. The 300 on its own is great from wide open but with the converter it's not brilliant at f5.6 but anything over f7.1 sharpens it up dramatically. This is a grab shot of a butterfly at f8 and at full resolution the eyes are clearly visible which I'm quite pleased with considering it was taken from around 10 feet away (maybe more). I'm still not sure whether I should change it for a 100-400 though, I'd still be able to use the 1.4x converter on it with my 5D3 as well.

Paul, I quite regularly (every 3-4 weeks) give the sensors of both my bodies a good blow out with a rocket blower just to keep the dust from building up and I've only had to clean the sensor of my 5D3 twice with my Lenspen SensorKlear and so far I've not needed to do my 70D, which I got on its release date last August (and started the thread). Brians advice above is excellent but you might find a good blow with a rocket blower will sort the problem straight away. It's not too difficult to do a clean, once you pluck up the courage you'll be surprised how much you worried about it in the first place. Good luck.

I'm considering buying one of these in the next few weeks and will be grabbing a 300 f4 at the same time. It's good to hear a good review with this combination. I have a 1.4 too.

It would be great to see a couple of images taken from further away with this combo if you have any please?

The same as you I have a 5d 3 as well and thought one of these would make a good addition for holidays as it's small cheap and easy to use for my wife. Additionally it might do a good job at wildlife and Motorsport too?

I have a 1d mk3 too which this could replace if it's good enough but I'm far too attached to it so will keep it come what may.

Stop shooting pictures of the sky at small apertures.

But that's my specialist interest! ;)

Take care and good luck.

Joking aside, Brian, thank you very much for your detailed reply (apologies not copied it all) and for the suggested reading. Have yet to dabble in PP so a lot to learn no doubt.

I won't obsess over it and appreciate the advice.

thanks again
Paul

Many thanks Stoo too!

I thought I would give it a go seeing as though they do camera and lens kits for cheaper. You don't ask you don't get. Low and behold they just came back with a price which is £19 cheaper than the individual parts. That will pay for a decent SD card as I only use CF currently.

Will place the order later. Job done.

Have stuck my 24-70 F2.8 L up for sale to help pay for this lot. Normally I just buy, but this time I thought I had better sell too lol

Had a message from DHL this morning saying my package was being delivered today... what is it? A nice new Canon 70D - I'm looking forward to getting home from work! Roll on 5:30...

Congrats on your new toys guys, lets see some of your photos soon. Gary, I'm sure you'll find that 300 f4L works a treat on the 70D, I know mine does, but I'm still not sure whether I should swap the 300 for a 100-400 L. Lauren, have a good read through the manual while the battery is charging and enjoy playing with your toy (ooh, that sounds a bit naughty :D)

....Hope these might answer your questions, @Gary Kinghorn but note that all are shot RAW with post-processing in Aperture and background selected and noise reduced in Photoshop (Imageonic Noiseware filter). So you are seeing the best I can manage to get them.

All shot on Canon 70D + Canon 300mm f4L IS + Canon 1.4x III. Click on the images to see more detail on Flickr.

^ About 50ft away on an overcast day at f5.6 (widest open with 1.4x fitted), 1/500 sec, handheld. ISO 800, substantially cropped.

^ About 15ft away on a bright evening, handheld. ISO 800, only minimally cropped.

At very long distances such as a bird on a lake, this combo with the 1.4x III (420mm) is poor and the prime Canon 400mm f5.6L (non IS) sharper (no 1.4x fitted).

But the great feature for me about Canon's 300mm f4L IS is that it focusses down to 5ft! No other megabuck supertelephoto white Canon L lens can match that as far as I know.

^ About 10ft away on Canon 300mm f4L IS without an Extender, handheld. ISO 800.

I hope this helps :)
Robin

Where is the cheapest place to pick one of these up? Not fussed about grey imports. Would happily go second hand but not seeing any in the classifieds

I am finally going to take the plunge and get a 70D body to use alongside my 6D.

Before I make the final commitment there is one question.
I recall a problem with (some of) the 60D where the "rubber" grip sometimes became unstuck from the camera body.
Not a major problem but an annoyance.
Has anyone experienced (or even heard of) this happening on the 70D, or was it a production glitch that has now been addressed?

....I haven't heard of such a problem anywhere so far.

I have had mine since December and shoot somewhere between 300-1,000 shots per week, all without any sign of wear and tear in any respect. I don't abuse my camera gear though.

I got mine on August 22nd last year, the day I started the thread off, and mine still looks like it did when it came out of the box and I use mine two or three times a week usually. The screen needs a clean though as, like always, it's got finger prints and breath marks on it and I don't like flipping it away when it's like that, so I've took the plunge and got a screen protector kit that still works with the touch screen http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191132491748?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 I put a GGS screen kit on my 5D3 when I got it and it's so much easier to clean than the screen, a quick wipe and the protector is clear as a bell yet I had to almost polish the screen to make it look that good.

I've been thinking about this as having my nose up against the screen/breathing on it causes it to have marks. Is this a straight fit or does it need trimming?

The one I've ordered is a laser cut out for each model to ensure you get a perfect fit. If the body has a top LCD screen you get one to cover that as well. I've also ordered the same make screen for the wifes 650D (it's a touchscreen as well) as she uses the touchscreen facility much more than I do. I just can't get the hang of using Liveview without a tripod, I like having the camera up to my eye when its handheld, but that's when the screen gets breathed on and whatever.

Sounds like the peeling grip material problem was only on the 60D, but the LCD screen protector sounds like it might be worthwhile, although I've never bothered with them on any of my cameras in the past.

Hi guys,
Has anyone on here had any focus problems with 70D and the Tamron 18-270 mm f3.5 - 6.3 I seem to be getting problems with it, I'm not getting as many keepers from the lens since I upgraded to 70D from 550 ?

I saw something on a YouTube video by Michael the mentor the other day and I am sure it was the lens you mentioned that doesn't work at all with hardly any keepers.
I have focus issues with my 85mm f1.8 wide open. In normal AF mode through the viewfinder it will not focus properly at all. My 1st body was exchanged and this one seems to have a better hit rate but not enough to keep the lens really. If I use live view AF it is totally better, but I don't want to use it that way all the time.

UPS tell me mine (which hadn't left Hong Kong this morning) should be with me by the end of play tomorrow.
Unfortunately I'm rallying in Ireland until Tuesday so I'll have to wait until then to get my hands on it.

Looking forward to trying the 300mm F4 that's coming with it and doing some comparisons with my 5d 3 and the 70d.

Yes I saw that too Michael. it did say if i remember correctly that it was worse wide open, sad thing is before this the Tamron was my favourite lens, when I had the 550D it didn't work well when i got a 650 so I upgraded to the 70d. I must check to see if there are any 70D upgrades on the Canon site.

Thanks for your reply :)

I had searched in the hope canon would have done a firmware update, but I havn't come across anything yet. Does your lens af in live view at all?

It is better in LV but I would rather use the eyepiece, its very hit and miss, I tried to get some photos of my dog in the bluebells yesterday, even tho' she was posing and very still not one was usable :(

I part exed my canon 55 -250 the get the camera wish I hadn't now :(

Is this at the longer end of the lens, ie at 270mm? At that end the lens is at 6.3, the max for AF on the 70D. Maybe it's borderline for enough light to reliably focus.

Yes mostly, towards that end, but the worst one yesterday were middle way on, might just do some kind of testing when the weather improves, its raining cats and dogs here at the moment :)

Hi Judi, what model of Tamron 18-270 are you using (non VC, VC or PZD), I've just tried the wifes PZD version on my 70D and I've got a few soft shots, but then again it's dull and wet here at the moment, but I'll try again tomorrow and see what I get when it's brighter. This lens, and my Tamron 28-300 VC, only get used when we're travelling really light and while the results are really acceptable they aren't the best quality lenses when compared with some of the more expensive lenses. The 28-300 Vc is quite a good performer on both my 70D and 5D3 and certainly seems to give better IQ than the 18-270 though, certainly good enough for a day out at the beach etc. where they get used most.

thanks for your input Stuart :)
its the Di11 VC PZD, its my walk about lens, I came very dull yesterday when we were out, have you got suggestions for a replacement, similar, lightish weight, I did think I might like to keep to Canon if there was a suitable one,
I do have a Canon 70-200 IS, a Sigma 17-70 and Sigma 105 Macro, but its very heavy for me I can only use it with a tripod

Did you clean or prep the screen prior to applying the films? Mine arrived yesterday.
