Hi Robin, I'm getting some good shots from the 300 f4L IS and 1.4x MkIII converter now, it just needs to be stopped down a bit to get the best quality shots from it. The 300 on its own is great from wide open but with the converter it's not brilliant at f5.6 but anything over f7.1 sharpens it up dramatically. This is a grab shot of a butterfly at f8 and at full resolution the eyes are clearly visible which I'm quite pleased with considering it was taken from around 10 feet away (maybe more). I'm still not sure whether I should change it for a 100-400 though, I'd still be able to use the 1.4x converter on it with my 5D3 as well.

Paul, I quite regularly (every 3-4 weeks) give the sensors of both my bodies a good blow out with a rocket blower just to keep the dust from building up and I've only had to clean the sensor of my 5D3 twice with my Lenspen SensorKlear and so far I've not needed to do my 70D, which I got on its release date last August (and started the thread). Brians advice above is excellent but you might find a good blow with a rocket blower will sort the problem straight away. It's not too difficult to do a clean, once you pluck up the courage you'll be surprised how much you worried about it in the first place. Good luck.
