Mountain Bike flash shots

ok I guess this may be better suited to the sport section.
Whilst out with a group of friends I've been shooting them riding downhill and a few have mentioned I'm blinding them with the flashes.
The flashes have been situated to the side and at ground level.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to better position flashes for mountain biking to avoid blinding?

do not position them where the riders will be looking..

That's what they mean by blinding them... You're placing the flashes where they look.

Get the flashes spread out a bit more, move them around, but DEFINATELY not pointing at them from where they're looking.

I've not been putting them in the riders line of sight but the sudden flash has been causing the issues.
I was hoping for a trick I've been missing.

Try using flashes from Behind or the Side?
