Well it has taken me 3 separate outings into Manchester to finally get up the courage to do this and finally spoke to someone. Not being one to do things by halves, I am going to attempt to shoot 100 strangers (I know many folk try this), engaging with each one I meet and asking for a portrait. These are the first couple. Improvements could be made and hopefully as I do more, the better they will become. Feel free to C&C as appropriate.

Thanks for looking. :)

Top one " do you know any good barbers"?

Second one " I only know one, but he's still learning"

Cool shots, never heard of this 100 strangers thing, what a good idea (y)

Thanks for the comments folks. Hopefully I won't be as nervous now I've got the first one out the way! And hopefully the shots will improve as I go along.

2 great characters there, and a great start to your 100 project hope you keep us updated

THanks! Hopefully I won't have to pluck up the courage for as long next time and get straight into it! Need to get into Manchester/Liverpool. Not fancying doing it around my home town really.

A couple of great shots there mate and a cracking, albeit brave challenge to take up. I look forward to seeing the rest....Its only fair you follow up with some young females now, just to balance things out mind. :)

What lens/body are you using if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks for the comments. As I said on the first post, it took me three trips of getting nothing to finally pluck up the courage to ask. I chose the guys as they had really cool hair so it was a good starting point to ask.

These were both taken with D700 + 85mm F1.4.

Will try and get out again this weekend and hopefully get 2 or 3 more!

Just one stranger shot from today. I approached a fellow who I thought was a sure thing but he turned me down :( .

I'm not a portrait specialist but the girl in #3 looks too stiff, she needs to relax a little like the guy in #1.
Good poses in 1 & 2 though.

Thanks for your comment. These are just strangers on the street, so how they pose is how they pose unfortunately. I am trying to choose people who look interesting. If they naturally relax and smile, so be it, if they don't, I'm not too fussed as it is a record of people out there in the world. People I have made contact with who, without having a camera in my hand, I would have passed by and never spoken to. I hope you get what I mean.

Excuse me stranger .. would you mind relaxing a little whilst I take your photo :p

Good project, I'll be keeping an eye on this one. Well done for having the guts to do it.

Great project and nice portraits! Well done..will keep an eye on this.

Hey, I love #4 and #5 what great characters, smiling and well captured (y)

I'm watching with interest so much so I'm considering doing my own one.. But judging by my previous attempts at projects it my not go very smoothly.:shake:

#2 is my fav so far as it seems more natural..

Keep up the good work though! just try to keep a head of steam behind you as it's all too easy to let it drift away from you..(y)

Love no 5 - good stuff mate!

Been thinking about doing this for a while to get away from posed model shots

They are really good, and 4 and 5 are excellent shots - both really characterful and natural in their correct environment - I believe it is called 'congruence'.

Really inspired by this to get on and do it rather than think about it.

Well done.

Thanks for the comments folks. I can see where I'm going wrong with the shots as I go along so hopefully they will get better as I get further through the challenge. Although, I do think that them all not being perfect isn't a complete failure.

I'm from Manchester and have not got the balls to do this but I am in total awe that you can and with great results.
Number 5 is my fav so far.
Is it just the light and location in 4 and 5 that make them stand out, they look / feel totaly different to the first 3.

Gaz

Good luck with the other 95. I really admire you for having a go at this.It is not something I could do and can imagine the courage needed to approach people and ask if you can take their photo, especially in todays climate where people are suspicious of anybody doing something out of the norm. Love shots 4 and 5 by the way.(y) and look forward to seeing more.

i think you've managed to establish a great connection with the subject, considering that many people don't really like having a big camera shoved in their face.
#4 and #2 are lovely photographs. nice composition and processing.

Thank you Gaz, Phil and Mark. Positive comments help me to keep going and hopefully let me know I am in the right direction with such things as exposure, composition etc.

Todays stranger proved a little more tricky as it was quite dark, however she was patient whilst I shot a few frames to make sure it was sharp. ISO 1600 and 1/80 at 85mm with no more Aperture to play with. Hopefully processed in a way that gives it a light airy feel.

Thanks Joe. I am sure I could use that way to expose, but I didn't want the ISO to go over 1600 here. So was patient and used a steady hand to get a sharp shot.

I am changing my approach as I go and dependant on the situation, but it all follows the lines of telling them the project I am doing and asking if they would be keen to participate. A couple have said no already and it does take me a while to get into the asking but I am enjoying the results. Just hope they are good standard of photos which is why I want the feedback. :)

Great project.

I couldn't help thinking that #5 looks like an old wartime photo jazzed up for the movies.
