"Panasonic G series" Owners Thread

Lumix G7 owner here. I'm contemplating an upgrade to the G9ii. Is there anyone here with any experience of this camera, please?

I would be interested too, would like to know what the G9ii does that the G9 doesn't.
Cost more?

I can't imagine that there's anything more I'd want than the G9 and 100~400mm gives me.

Today I tried the G9 and 100-400mm lens with the added digital zoom (can't believe I haven't tried it before!!)
I am impressed. I have reduced the images by a massive chunk and they are still too large for the forum. My usual RAW files that I edit never need reduction for the forum so not sure what the digital zoom and camera saved JPeg does that makes the file so large?

Seems strange.
For posting here I resize to 1200 on the long side with 85% compression.

I tried the digital zoom when I first got the G9 (is that nearly 2 years ago already?) and found it made no difference to the image if I used the digital zoom or just cropped the normal image, but I'm going to try it again after your post :)

Just to add: For uploading to the forum, I work to an image file size less than 500KB with a longest side of 1024 pixels

No your probably right, it's likely the same as cropping, although on my free editor, the in-camera digi zoom seems to give more room for a close up finished image than the crop tool on the editor. It's still early days for me whether I prefer the digi zoom but enjoyed the first results and I certainly think my Moon shots were a bit better than a heavy crop on post edit.

Have you tries the 80MP mode on the moon :)

I took that photo this morning - Hadleigh Castle from the bird hide ("Monty's Lookout") on Two Tree Island. 1.2km approx, according to OS maps. Lumix G7 with 100-400mm lens.

That's my first attempt at posting an image on this forum. I used
tags and linked to the image on Google Photos. It seems to have come out rather large.

Edit: ah - when I posted that the forum software seemed to dislike the img ... /img (all surrounded with [ ] ). I must be doing something wrong...

Ordered a second battery for the G80 this evening from Duracell Direct. I've been using it a lot lately with the 12-60 and 100-300mm lenses for walks. Whilst I do notice the loss of capability in both camera and lens for birds/wildlife compared to G9 and 100-400mm, I do find the lighter rig better for short strolls by the river, especially as I have injured a shoulder and find lifting the cameras up a bit uncomfortable at the moment.

So the smaller lighter rig is more enjoyable and is serving me pretty well at the moment.

The G80 is still a very good camera, I gave mine to my son, but miss it :)

I often use the 100-300 on the G9 as well, it is much lighter and easier to use than the 100-400, and gives you the equivalent of 600mm max, and is perfectly comfortable on the GX9.

Very flexible system, suits me, and looking at your photos, suits you well too :)

I have badly inured my shoulder so can't even used the G9 and 100-00mm at the moment, it's too heavy a rig to hold and would stop me healing. The articulating screen on the G80 is so helpful when it hurts to lift a camera and you have to be careful. I'm not taking proper camera trips as it would be foolish at the moment, need to recover first.

The mrs drove my car today, it needed taking out for a run and I chucked the camera in the back. Managed a shot of one of the Spring lambs, a cloudy day and not a bad result considering my current state.

Get well soon Keith.

I haven't been able to get out much recently but one thing I want to do is take some pictures when Mrs WW attends her citizenship ceremony, her request that I do so. As my Sony A7 can't shoot silently I'll use my GX9 but I don't know where I'll be able to stand so I was hoping to take my 12-35mm f2.8. Unfortunately it went faulty and refused to focus a while ago and had to go for repair so I'm hoping it'll be back before the ceremony. If not I might take my GX9 with 45mm f1.8 and my GX80 with possibly my 17mm f1.8.

Be careful mate. Mistreat an injured shoulder and you've got it for life. Take it steady.

I'm back in the Panasonic fold - I've just purchased a G9II to run alongside my OM1. A few years ago I had a G9, and already, with limited use, I can see the autofocus is much superior for my bird photography.
I also managed to find a lovely condition PL200mm f2.8 - one of my all time favourite lenses.
In due course I look forward to posting some images.

Hope your shoulder recovers soon, and the G80 seems to be doing OK :)

Thanks Steve
It's easy to forget how capable a camera it is. If you accept the limitations and utilise it's strengths it can do so well, and I love the size and ergonomics.
I hadn't had it long when I took this and I still love it for this kind of thing.

Just a couple of pictures taken on our walk to and fro today.

GX9 and 45-150mm.

It's a while since I've used this camera and I do tend to forget how capable it is and how nice MFT lenses are. I took some pictures indoors at ISO 25,600 and although they looked awful on camera after processing and running through Adobe DeNoise they are fine. I was shocked but in a good way :D

Bit late but managed to get a brand new Panasonic Lumix G9 Digital Camera with 12-60mm F2.8-4.0 Leica Lens from WEX. Doing a PX for a nikon lens which should reduce the cost a bit.
OPk why am I beginning to go from Nikon to a four thirds camera? it is all about weight. I will be still keeping some of tfhe Nikon stuffbut may well sell some as well.
I already have a couple of Panasonic items ie HC-X1500 camcorder and a small compact TZ95 model.
I wanted also a 4k camera and on paper this G9 looks as if it is what I am wanting

Update the panasonic G9 has arrived.
First impressions
Bit of a pleasant surprise how light it is to start with . The flip rear screen screen is definately a bonus making things that bit easier to photograph.THe two SD card slots and being able to select both to record video and stills will save a lot of time. I don't really think the vast menu is really necessary as setting up what you want and loading C1 C2 or C3
and locking in is not something to on a shoot.

downside
One thing is charging the Battery, oh!!! you may as well wait all day with an 180 hr charge from flat to full, why not produce a fast charge unit?? Definately need a second battery but not at panasonic prices. I did research and others recommend duracell version so ordered a spare from them.
The handbook print is so small I find it easier to download the instructions instead of having to use a magnifying glass to read the book.
As the camera arrived late in the day I have not had time to see how it performs in daylight so can't coment on picture quality ,and for video having to set the shutter speed to the correct for frame rate. Job for another day.

They are not that heavy, but neither are they small and light.
The custom menus are very easy to use, and have been a plus feature for me on their cameras.

Are you charging the battery in camera, or with a charger? I have a genuine charger and another dual charger, but have never noticed it taking so long to charge, but I have never charged it in camera. I have quite a few batteries shared between the two G9s (I don't keep them separate) some of them are genuine, the others are not, and cost about £11 each, and they perform well.

All camera manual are too small :) That's why I print and bind my own. The advantage with the Panasonics is that the menu system is so logical and intuitive that once you have used it a few times, you don't need the manual.
Panasonic have a separate pdf book for the auto focus settings, and there are quite a few similar guides around on certain aspects and features. I printed them out, but don't even know where they are now.
If you look on ebay for a printed manual, the people who sell them will do you an A4 version if you ask, was less than £15 a couple of years ago, they are comb bound, but you may be able to request a hot-melt bind if you prefer. (most people like the fold-flat of the comb binding)

The Lieca 12-60 lens is good, but no better than the Panasonic Lumix 12-60. I sold my Liaca one and replaced it with a 14-140 which is roughly the same size, and a very good all round lens.

I haven't used one much for video, but all the reviews and write-ups speak highly of them, of the quality and the features and they are so customisable (button allocations etc) that I imagine they can be set up very nicely for individual preferences.

You will find it convenient to carry when you want a few lenses, one small shoulder bag (30X15cm 20cm high) holds the camera with a 14-140 fitted, a 100-300, a 7-14 plos spare batteries and cards, couple of filters, cloths etc.

The only lens I would not suggest as being excellent is the Panasonic Lumix G VARIO 4-5.6/45-200 Mega OIS

You will be surprised at how capable they are at high ISOs, especially processing RAWs.

I mainly use electronic shutter, and I have yet to notice and rolling shutter or banding effects in the shots I take.

I'm sure you are going to enjoy it :)

I wish Panasonic did a small mini SLR camera like the G100 but with two near top of camera controls or at least one clickable one.

I loved the handling of my G1 and I bought the G100 thinking it would be a more modern replacement and although it had very good points (small and light, lovely image quality, good DR and a lovely EVF) I just couldn't live with the controls/handling and kept accidentally jogging the real wheel so it had to go.

I have a FF Sony A7 but still use MFT cameras for their silent shutter, sports car like responses (The A7 is a bit of a slug) and for zooms / long lenses but with my normal primes if I don't need silent shooting and responsiveness there's no advantage in a larger MFT camera like the G9 as some including that are bigger than my FF A7. I do like the GX9 and the GX80 even more but their EVF's are relatively poor.

I hope one day they do either a RF style camera with a really nice EVF or another G100 type camera with a lovely EVF and with better (for me) controls.

As above, I was shocked in a good way at how pictures taken with my old GX9 at ISO 25,600 were when run through Adobe DeNoise. When I saw them on the back of the camera I honestly thought they were all going to be garbage but instead they were all useable.

Yes, about a month ago I did some comparisons between the G9 and the 5Diii, and there was not much in it.
I just used Affinity for the processing and noise reduction, the results were very useable

When I first got my G1 I compered it to my 5D (MK1) and in some ways the G1 gave the 5D a very big scare. Much later I ended up processing my own wedding pictures taken with a 5DII and I recon my better MFT cameras (GX80 and GX9) give better IQ.

Comparing these to my A7 MK1 the Sony has a definite advantage in ultimate IQ if I go looking for the differences but quite often MFT pictures can be easily lost amongst A7 pictures.

Sangoma

The battery charging time I quoted from the G9 manual. I have only tried charging with the charger unit at the moment so can say if charging via camera. Ordered anotrher battery from duracell as a backup
Setting the menu up under C1 setting. The best way I know is to put what you want under that "save" control then add whatgever as one may find useful in addition, the camera will override the original . so now it has the oeriginal setting plsu the extra, if that makes any sense.
So this afternoon I have been trying the camera out and i have to say how please i am with the results.

What I have discovered is my wireless remote " phottix WXD-188 " transmitter and receiver works for both stills and video on the G9. Thinking way ahead what one can capture from a remote distance so as not to disturb!

I normally plug my cameras into the pc via a usb lead, transfer the pictures across and then turn the camera off and leave it to charge. Very often the battery is fully charged when I've finished and want to turn the pc off.

My manual says 190 minutes
There's one downside disposed of :)

Remember if you add to a custom save, you have to save it again under the same C number, otherwise it won't be permanent.
Quite useful as you might well need a common base to make minor adjustments to.

yes forgot to mention saving under same C number. From what I understand and I might be wrong, but recharging a part charged battery reduces the battery life a bit. However charging from flat is the better way to go ??????

No, there is no memory effect on lithium batteries, that used to be with nicads many many years ago.

Keep them full :)

Second day with the panasonic G9 (not the G9ii) in the back garden. Yes well pleased with the camera for stills.
