No
I have been livving in London for just over a year now and the only photogenic places that I know of are Picadilly Circus and Embankment (along the Thames). I have taken a few photos there but Im somewhat tired of shooting the same thing over and over again.

Anywho, I was hoping some of you guys might be nice enough to share some locations in and around London. I dont mean the really nice, top secret places, but just something decent and interesting.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

depends what you want to shoot, London has probably more locations for shooting than anywhere else - but do you want landscape, urban, portraits, weddings, candids - it all depends - but it's all out there

There's huge amounts of photogenic places in London, there's almost a picture around every corner...

Specsavers?

Whilst I assume you are being mildly humourous bbb, its a good idea to use smileys to indicate that, otherwise we might think you are being merely sarcastic.

FWIW, I only moved to London 5 years ago, and a year in, even living with a born Londoner, I really didn't know where to go beyond the usual touristy areas, partly because I really wasn't sure what I wanted to shoot. So, if you can give us an idea of what you think you might like to aim your camera at and I am sure there will be plenty of suggestions forthcoming (y)

Canary Wharf, Greenwich (o2 as well), Regents Park, Richmond - plenty of possible locations :)

Man, I wish I lived where you do! The possibilities are endless. Open your mind :D

Kew Gardens
Hyde Park
Oxford Street is also good.
HMS Belfast
Multitudes of interesting tube stations and subways. I generally stumble across them so can't remember exactly which ones.

...and what everyone else said

St. Pancras Station
Borough Market
Greenwich/Woolwich foot tunnels
Thames Bridges...
Leicester Square - Covent Garden
Nunhead cemetery (and other Victorian necropolis!)
Lots and lots of parks, gardens and squares - Kew?

to suggest but a few more to occupy a few hours.

Happy snapping:)

I am mainly interested in landscape photography. Im also looking for some decent locations for automotive photography.

Haha. You feel my pain. London is so big and there is so much happening, yet if you arent in the know, then its hard to find some decent places.

So I am mainly interested in doing landscape photography, and also looking for nice locations for automotive photography. My camera is a Canon 50D and I have the Tamron 17-50mm lens. I also have the nifty fifty for flower shots.

Brick Lane, Camden and Portobello markets for candid portraits?

Wow. I cant believe how fast the responses are here.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I have got them all in an excel spreadsheet and Ill go to each one every weekend provided the weather is decent enough to do so.

Cheers.

Primrose hill, parliment hill (on Hamsptead heath) and Greenwich park are idea locations for landscapes of London.

Primrose Hill
Kew Gardens (again)
A boat trip down the Thames

For vehicles, there used to be a regular car/bike meeting on Chelsea Bridge, but I'm not sure if this still happens

My best advice would be to go out on your own (children, girlfriends, wives who don't photograph are just not condusive to good photography), early (can't count the number of times I've been out by mid day just as it's clouded over), and pick an area but not one particular place.

I like to sort of plan a route but not be at all rigid.

There are so many places in London where a little side street or archway will lead to treasures you would not think existed today.

I am particularly thinking of The City and area North of the river between Embankment and Blackfriars.

One tip would be to take a small central area A-Z so that when you get totally lost you can easily find where you are, oh and an Oyster card is useful.

Another good game is to get on a bus, the first one that comes along and when you spot something interesting out of the window get off and take some photos. Get on the next bus to come along, in a different direction if possible - repeat.

Hope you find some good photos to post on here, I have been taking photos here for the best part of 35 years and still go "wow I never knew that was there".

Have fun

David

Tower Bridge
Greenwich Foot Tunnel
City - Lloyds of London & The Gherkin
Plenty of interesting detail on the older buildings as well
Lower Thames Street offers access to the river, for some views of the other side.
St Pauls - Inside and out
Millenium Bridge
SouthBank - Skateboarders, graffiti and mad bmx'rs.

Suburbs -
Wanstead Flats on Sunday - Football
Epping Forest
Hainault Forest

etc. etc.

Also, keep an eye on the Meetings section, theres often meets being arranged in and around London..

Theres nothing in the rules to say you cant post in there asking for a meet yourself..

:)

This is going to sound extremely cheesy, but you guys are amazing! Prior to posting on this site, I was searching google for hours trying to find some places to shoot in London and the only decent suggestion I could find was Crystal Palace Park.

Thanks again for all the great ideas. I am literally copying them into an excel sheet and planning on working my way through each location week by week. My oyster card and camera will be getting an absolute caning. :D

You know what they say - you can spend an entire lifetime in London and still not have seen everything.

Ill definitely keep that in mind. Might try and organise something when the weather clears up... whenever that will be.

a few more :)

tate modern
battersea power station
highgate cemetary

Brick Lane for the Sunday market.

Edit: Sorry already been mentioned.

I find some bits of Shoreditch quite interesting, it was bombed quite heavy I think so you get some good contrasts of new and old.

Anywhere that is busy? How about Bank or Liverpool Street during rush hour? I particularly like Bank as it's manic during rush hour.

There is a bar on Old Street called the Foundry that very interesting if you end up that way, they also often have art exhibitions in the basement.

It really depends what you want to photograph, but you live there, and I assume you're not under any time constraints, so why not start a "My London" portfolio? Just shoot whatever you like. You can cull the images and specialise later if you want to.

I've only visited London about 10 - 15 times. I was there in May last year, and stayed in Ludgate Hill. I had a few hours free the morning after I arrived, before a meeting, and just wandered around the area with a compact. Took about 600 shots of anything and everything, from people to street scenes, traffic, signs, menus outside restaurants, architecture, building details, the river, trees etc. Not planned, but not totally arbitrary either. It worked out well for me, as a sort of "London That Morning" shoot.

I used a compact, and I don't know if I would use a DSLR for this, unless I knew I was going to need it. I'm not too concerned about the photography police from the department of fear and paranoia, but the compact is small, light and unobtrusive. Most people don't even notice, or pay any attention - just another tourist with a P & S - which suited me!

I was in London in 1968 and I found a photo opportunity in just about every step I took, absolutely amazing. Perhaps one day I will return ;)

i lived there for 4 years
city and suburbs
plenty parks people and places
you need to set yourself a little project

i usually shot the touristy things...and tried to be different...but concise

and there are some great people there ...

Here's what I do: buy a travel card (or use your Oyster card), get on a random line and pick a tube station name that I like and get off there. Then start shooting!

I really like that idea. Ill give that a shot once I have exahausted my list of locations provided by the guys here.

Again, thanks very much for the adivce guys and girls. All the locations mentioned should keep me busy for the next couple of months at the least. (y)
