Please recommend external SSD for MacBook Pro

Hi guys,

Would appreciate some help with choosing best external SSD for my wife's MacBook Pro Mid 2012
Will be used to edit holiday clips in Final Cut Pro. I am not a MAC guy but guess thunderbolt should not bottleneck anything, should it?

Thunderbolt would be the best, but USB3 is no slouch. I've got LaCie rugged ones that are Thunderbolt (500GB) , and I also got a 2TB one that I put into an external case, which is USB3. the latter is my goto one for FCP work. I've done 6 camera multi-cam work on it (on a (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015)) and its been fine. It's a Crucial 2.5" SSD drive.
