Question for the site owners

Why is is some photos on here ( possibly other threads) don’t load properly .i.e partial view ..even when hosted externally from Flickr etc .it’s becoming a problem as you can’t comment on what you can’t see

Do you have an example post you are seeing this on Jeff? I am not a site admin but it will help understand the issue.

I have seen this occasionally in the past but have just gone through a number of forums and threads with no problem. I can't see any consistency in the issue but my IT instinct suggests that it is a performance issue, with the data transfer speed from the source of the images, which could be a problem with any of the source system performance, network latency across the net and locally, and our hosting system. Or a combination of those. @sirch is more expert than me on these things, but to test it thoroughly would require repeated tests at different times of day, and a mixture of Flickr and locally (to TP) hosted images; plus a number of volunteers to test it in different locations and with differing pc's/laptops etc.
I think it's something we need to monitor.

The one that sparked the post this morning is now o.k ,next time it happens i’ll post a notification

It would be good if you linked to an example @the black fox

It could also involve the end user bandwidth, web browser, computer performance, etc.

Also you get what you pay for ;)
One in the off topic joke thread by krissstopper ?

What operating system and web browser are you using? Do you have any "protection" running in the browser, VPN, ad-blockers, antivirus, etc. ?

It just happened to me today with this:
Post in thread 'The Official TP Funnies thread ( Jokes Memes etc )'
https://www.talkphotography.co.uk/t...es-thread-jokes-memes-etc.617156/post-9097107

I got the top of Bill Gates’ head and nothing I could do would make it load. I’ve just been back and it loaded perfectly.

Usually it happens with Flickr hosted photo and the clicking through to Flickr and coming back makes it load perfectly quickly.

That would be thesa e one that didn’t load for me I suspect, linked above. If correct that rather blows up the usual bandwidth reason!

But why would it only happen in TP but opens swiftly in Flickr and then back in TP?. Also reloading or waiting has no effect!

And on another page or lower in the same page only the first doesn’t load while the others are fine.

This did the same for me just now and have experienced it with other photos before onTP.

There's a page here that might offer a solution. It's aimed at Chrome users but many of the suggestions are generic...

Bill Gates, the pouting female and Freddie Mercury loaded instantly for me and I've never looked at that thread.

As you know, this has been raised before. For me it goes in ‘episodes”. The commonest, I think is when someone posts several Flickr linked images in a single post. It’s always the first one that partly loads then the rest are fine. That doesn’t seem to me like a bandwidth issue. Refreshing or going to another page or another app and back has no effect. It’s always cured by clicking on the image so it goes to Flickr (no problem loading in Flickr) and then returning to the original, when it will have loaded.

The Bill Gates one wasn’t linked externally and nothing worked except “time”.

All this on a fully updated iPad Air3 and iPad Pro 10.6 and Safari. No problem with other sites at the same time AFAICS :(.

For reasons best known to the creators of the Xenforo software external images are "proxied" , so rather than your browser just getting the image from flickr or wherever the <img> tag is redirected to our server which then gets the image from flickr and sends it to your browser. Add to that flickr can be pretty flakey so all in all it is what it is, it's not a show stopper and it's not getting fixed anytime soon but you are welcome to moan about it periodically if it makes you feel better :)

Yes, but … the current example (‘Bill Gates’) isn’t hosted external on Flickr or anywhere so I’m not sure it fits your explanation.

Personally, I’m not “moaning*” about it. It’s mostly just odd and a very slight inconvenience. I’ve only ever mentioned it because it seems odd and might be easily fixed or indicate some more important problem.

* I might have been but all my moaning energy has been sapped by Brexit & Johnson :(.

It's fine for me
And me.

Also, sometimes people post over sized images as attachments ( not in this case)
2 out of 3 show the 3rd as a X

It seems as though the available band width has been taken up by the other 2.
When the X one is reduced to a proper size that one also shows.

From memory, I think it’s always the first that doesn’t load when there are several oin a post and the fact that loads immediately if you click through to Flickr and back surely disproves that?

Since the images (not the current Bill Gates one) are alll (I honk) Flickr one’s is it possible that Flickr initially ‘sends’ one of its larger size images for the first one and corrects it for the later and then for the first once it ’realise’ it’s sent the wrong one?

Sorry, that’s probably using all the wrong terms but this is all ελληνική γλώσσα to me.Flickr has several sizes so how does it ‘know’ which one to send?

What PROVE's it is the fact that when I've told people to reduce the size(s) it works 100% of the time.

But in most/all the examples you are not involved at all just TP software and Flickr software. It’s curious that you and I think no staff have seen it. Maybe you are always signed in as admin or whatever though it”s not that common but seems to go in ‘episodes’ as I said earlier. :(

Since it’s a transient effect one can’t report for investigation.

Since retiring I can afford the time, yes I'm here several hours a day, and checking out as many forums as I can, in that time,
for issues, either site issues or just plain "issues" created by members.

If ( as above) I see it, I report the issues myself,
There are many things happening in the background that members will never see.

! I expressed that badly. I didn’t mean you are always here but that when you are here you are signed as as staff and so may get a different view than we proles

Richard, I can vouch that I have seen this phenomenon very occasionally but it has no discernable pattern to me. I'm therefore inclined to believe size matters, but also sometimes network latency and screen rendering performance

I see things as you see things, but with extra's thrown in :)

As I said, I’m not really bothered by it just offering my experiences and a bit interested in why it happens.

When posting images directly onto the server, there's a size check.

Does a remote image (e.g. Flickr) go through that same block of code? If it does, what happens with a fail?

I’ve just been trying that with a ‘random’ image. if you choose the BBCode and pick larger than 1024 it’s X’d in preview & post. If you choose “share” a slightly smaller image than the 1024 pic is shown so it wouldn’t seem possible to achieve the unwanted result that way. There are other choices of course.

Yep, posts OK and size is obviously not the 5616x3744 I chose.

Thing is this doesn’t seem to happen even randomly on other sites /forums it’s just peculiar to TP and only since the takeover as far as I can remember ..

No it goes back before that for me. I think there are other threads — maybe I started one though I think I didn’t bother until someone else reported it and I realised it wasn’t just a quirk of my system.

Sounds like a good enough reason for us to chuck it all in (y)
Or

Yes, it has happened way back, and via 3 servers IIRC.
I've no idea why it happens, and it only reported very, very occasionally.
I think Marcel concluded that it was a "local" issue.

Could be a browser thing with the OS. I looked at all examples above and they worked fine with Safari on my Mac.

I’m on a Mac so it affects them to
