I will hopefully be getting a SB900 soon.

What are the benifits over the SB400 apart from the directional head.

Lots of benefits! Off the top of my head.....

The biggest plus gotta be wireless off camera flash - can be used as a remote or master.

Flash zoom head, gel filters, diffuser and bounce card....

The SB900 is a very capable monster. I'm migrating my SB600's to 900 'sat the moment. 3 bought with one more soon. I just love'em! :)
 
The Hummer of the flash gun world :D

I like mine more than I like my SB800, had problems though with it and the hot shoe connection on the D700 so watch out for loosness.
